This beautifully aged UK matching numbers Jaguar E-Type was purchased by its most recent owner 31 years ago and although purchased as a usable, good driving largely original E-Type, it was then put through a major rolling shell rebuild that was completed in 1991 by a Durham based main dealership with classic car facilities. The no expense spared restoration was carried out to an exceptionally high standard and since completion in 1991, the last owner covered 500 faultless miles. The E-Type was only used for local driving, and despite covering so few miles, it was MOT tested most years and MOT’s on file are present from 2005 to 2016 taking the cars mileage to 85,231. Earlier history and MOT’s show the E-Type had covered 75433 miles when 13 years old, suggesting the mileage of 85,231 is the genuine total mileage. Since restoration, the E-Type has been maintained by the main dealership in Durham and the car comes with an exceptional history with invoices and photographs of the cars total rebuild.
After initial purchase during July 1989 the E-Type covered 1000 miles. The owner, having enjoyed familiarising himself with the car decided to take the car off the road in the Autumn to have some cosmetic work carried out. First, the Jaguar was completely re-trimmed by the supplying classic car dealership and then booked in for some mechanical work with Newcastle Jaguar dealership, Dutton Forshaw. The E-Type had the suspension completely rebuilt, and with the rear subframe removed the brakes were also overhauled. The car now felt much tighter on the road and at the beginning of December 1989 the owner noticed a local Volvo dealership was displaying a Jaguar E-Type in its showroom and were now offering restoration work to historic vehicles. The dealership, Masters and Milburn in Durham had built up an impressive portfolio of restoration work on various classic cars, mainly Jaguar and being just half a mile from the owners home, it made sense to entrust them with future work.

In January 1990 the car was delivered to Masters and Milburn and was ultimately stripped down to a rolling shell. With the engine and gearbox removed, all glass, brightwork, trims and webasto sunroof removed, the body was stripped down to bare metal and then restored, as necessary with many new panels all listed in the thorough documentation. The E-Type was then fully re-painted, waxoyl protected underneath and built up with new rubbers, trims and chromework to ensure a top class finish. The all syncromesh four speed gearbox was rebuilt, and the original 4.2 engine stripped down and rebuilt with re-ground crankshaft, main and big end bearings, honed cylinder bores, new piston rings, exhaust guides and valves and all valve seats ground in. The E-Type was built up with various new parts and ancillaries such as a stainless steel exhaust system, new steering rack, engine mountings, re-conditioned radiator, new hoses etc.

On completion of the work YUG 164J was stored in a dry garage and taken out for occasional use. The E-Type shared its stable in Durham with various other collectors cars and has been superbly maintained with receipts on file for servicing and MOT testing. Whilst ultra-low mileage has been covered, the E-Type has been kept on trickle charge and regularly run with an exhaust extraction system in place in the last owner's garage. Regular polishing and a good quality dust cover has kept the E-Type looking wonderful. Almost 30 years on since the work and just 500 miles, the E-Type presents incredibly well with a delightful Old English White paint finish. The chrome work all presents well, and the car has the general feel of a high quality original car/older restoration that can be driven with confidence. 500 miles since its full engine and gearbox rebuild means the major mechanicals are still incredibly strong and fit and the car requires no major work. YUG 164J is structurally excellent and is superb on the road with lovely tight handling, lots of power and impressive performance from its gorgeous 4.2 engine. This is matching numbers E-Type that has been cherished for over 30 years and has had a no expense spared rebuild with only very few careful miles covered since. This is a lovely honest car with a detailed book containing all invoices and photographs from its impressive restoration. Not only is the paperwork impressive, try this car in the sunshine with the webasto roof fully open - fantastic.
