Can a car be too accomplished for its own good? It's a question that has become more of an issue over the last few years. With ever-growing sophistication in tyre technology, variable dampers, electronic control systems, dual-clutch gearboxes, infotainment systems, led screens, the real driving experience becomes more and more out of touch.

Well, if the worst happens there will always be the Z4 M Coupe to remind you just what it means when you put 338bhp through the rear wheels. In fact it is liberating not having to think about getting all your settings sorted before you can enjoy the drive – instead, you just attack the bends in the confident knowledge that the stiff chassis and the brilliant M-diff will look after you. There's so much traction you can nail the throttle in any gear in most situations without fear of things getting out of hand. That M3 engine is such a joy. As you watch the rev counter needle around to 8000rpm in all gears, the sound matches the acceleration. Pressing the Sport button noticeably sharpens the throttle sensitivity making B roads a lot more fun!

I hate to say it, but it’s time for me to part ways with my hugely respected Sepang Bronze Z4 M Coupe. A true modern classic, a rare engineering masterpiece, this beautiful car will soon become a collector’s dream.

Performance
It's not that the M Coupe isn't sophisticated - it's got all the abbreviations you'd expect of a modern BMW, from ABS to DSC via EBD, ASC and EDR. Thankfully, though, you'd never worry about it when you're in the hot seat, because there are no endless settings to play with. Just start the car and drive.

The numbers are compelling. The 3.2-litre M Power engine produces the same stats as it does in the sublime E46 M3, which means 338bhp at a heady 7900rpm. At 1485kg the M Coupe is nearly 100kg lighter than the four-seat M3. Having owned both, the improvement in the driving experience is substantial. Take a lap time at the Nurburgring. At 8min 15sec, the Z4 M is said to be significantly quicker than the E46 M3. It is much more responsive and consistent.

A rare opportunity
BMW only ever sold 588 BMW Z4 M Coupes which brings the rarity factor to Ferrari and Lamborghini levels. Most of them are black, blue or grey. There are only 9 M Roadsters and 10 M Coupes in the UK in Sepang Bronze, so this particular car is extremely rare. The only rarer M Coupes are the ones in Phoenix Yellow, but in my opinion this colour doesn’t suit the car at all. Below is the colour data on all of the M Coupes sold in the UK:

Interlagos Blue ............144
Black Sapphire.............120
Silver Grey....................72
Space Grey...................2
Imola Red.....................56
Ruby Black...................54
Carbon Black................52
Titanium Silver..............26
Alpine White.................18
Midnight Blue................17
Monaco Blue.................14
Sepang Bronze.............10
Phoenix Yellow..............3
Total..............................588

Sepang Bronze is a truly stunning colour, especially in the sun when the metallic sparkle comes to life. It is also the only metallic M colour. The compliments from everybody never end. Among all other BMW M cars, it probably suits the M Coupe the most. It is also why buyers from new never actually realised how good it looks.

The specification
Besides the amazing colour, this is a well optioned M Coupe. The memory M Sports seats are finished in matching Light Sepang Bronze Nappa Leather (Code LSA8). Rear park distance control comes very handy with the somewhat restricted rear view. Automatic wipers and xenon headlights keep you focused on the driving experience. The absence of the hugely outdated navigation system in the middle of the dashboard makes a cleaner and even more refined look. The BMW business CD and upgraded speaker system provide good entertainment on a longer drive. A CD changer preparation is in place, but as this has also become outdated technology, a 3.5mm auxiliary input in the glovebox comes handy. Bluetooth connectivity for these urgent calls. Factory tinted rear windows. Leather dash trim for a bit of luxury. Standard features include onboard computer, air conditioning, heated seats, auto-dip mirrors, alarm and immobiliser. No cup holders, of course. Alright, they are available as a retrofit option for the caffeine-addicted!

Service History
Nowadays it’s a difficult task to find an E46 M3 with less than 120,000 miles on the clock. Z4 M Coupes are privileged in this regard and have been driven less perhaps because of their nature. The 59,935 miles on this car are considered low even by Z4 M standards, so this is a great advantage.

The car comes with a fully stamped BMW Service book with the following entries:

Date.......................Mileage......Location...............................Type of maintenance
29/10/2006............32..............Inchcape BMW Service.........Pre-delivery Check
08/12/2006............1,119...........BMW Cooper Banstead........Running-in Check

18/06/2009............20,239.......BMW Cooper Banstead........Inspection I
11/10/2010..............29,914.......BMW Cooper Banstead.........Oil Service
09/10/2013.............37,939.......S.P. Commercials..................Oil Service
28/01/2015.............40,626.......Paddock Motors...................Inspection II
17/06/2016.............42,923.......Forza GB...............................Oil Service
29/11/2017..............51,248........Clayton Cars.........................Inspection I
19/07/2019.............58,007........AutoBase..............................Oil Service
01/07/2020.............59,935.......Batman's Garage..................Oil Service

Most BMW owners who are true enthusiasts will know that the service intervals recommended by the OnBoard Computer are way too infrequent and may cause excessive engine wear. It is therefore commonly accepted to service the car every one or two years, regardless of the mileage. It is evident from the service records that servicing and maintenance has been performed right. I have just done the annual MOT and oil service. I have also sent an oil sample for analysis which came back all clear without any warnings.

Maintenance and repairs

As most auto enthusiast would know, an opportunity to own such a rare German piece of engineering doesn’t come often. I had waited a long while until one became available on the market, so when it eventually did, I knew I had to have it. And it happened!

The car had a few issues that the previous owner (there are 4 previous owners in total) had managed to live with. I am very particular however when it comes to cars looking and working as they did the day they left the factory. So I set off on challenge to get everything up to standard. It would have been a shame not to save such a rare car and to treat it like any other ordinary M Coupe.

The car was involved in a minor front collision in 2013. It was right around the time when the values of M Coupes were at their lowest, so the quality of the repair work was not carried out very well. It was done cheap and it showed. The advantages of the poor paintwork were that it was very easy to identify that only the front bumper cover and the O/S corner of the bonnet were affected.

I decided to do a proper repair job starting from the ground up and photographically documenting every step along the way. The car will come with a hard cover picture album with over 100 photos (and a digital copy) of the repair process. Many months went by and many thousands were spent, but the end result was fantastic.

The highlights:
- Disassembly of the front-end body panels
- Chassis measurements and alignment for correct geometry
- Reassembly of the front-end panels
- Secondary disassembly of exterior body panels in preparation for a respray
- Complete respray of all external panels and engine bay
- Reassembly, sanding, polishing and sealing of the new paintwork

All of the steps above are pictured in great detail in the photo album which will be provided to the new owner as part of the complete paperwork. This forms part of the history of the M Coupe and no doubt it will be very valuable in the future.

The M Coupe now looks, feels and drives as new. It is classified as Condition Inspected on the HPI register after a rigorous inspection at Autolign. This is the only UK inspection approved by HPI and MIRRC. It is a very thorough test run by highly qualified vehicle engineers. Any repairs to the vehicle must be perfect or it's a fail, no compromise. This vehicle inspection proves that the vehicle is back in excellent roadworthy condition and been repaired to the manufacturers' original specification.

Along the way, a number of other parts have been replaced with new original BMW parts, costing literally thousands of pounds:

- New original BMW Front brake callipers, rotors and pads
- New original BMW Front gas struts
- New original BMW rear brake pads
- New original BMW O/S swing arm
- New original BMW yaw sensor
- New original BMW headlight jet washers

Overall Condition
The paintwork is astonishing, it looks like glass. The interior is in excellent and super clean condition. There are at least 5mm left on the Michelin Pilot’s all round. The wheels are spotless. Brake pads, brake fluid, and Bosch Aeroblade wipers are new. Always garaged and under a cover. The warning triangle kit, M mobility tyre repair kit and BMW tools are all present in the boot and they look brand new. The pictures speak for themselves.

The Personalised Registration
Though worth quite a bit, the “Fast Zed” registration number is actually included in price. I personally think it works well, but I realise the buyer might have a different preference. Therefore there is a possibility to negotiate a sale without it.

To Wrap it up.
As there are only 10 of these Sepang Bronze Z4 M Coupes in the UK, it feels very special to own one of them. I have the privilege of knowing 5 other owners, and we’ve been in constant contact over group chat. Whether it is questions about the cars, sharing an experience, or going for nice drive together, we have formed an unique club. Follow us with #sepangbronzez4m on Instagram. No doubt the new owner of my car will be invited to join and continue sharing the experience. Unfortunately we have not been able to track down the other 4 owners as they do not seem to be members of clubs and online forums. But maybe the new owner would have ideas how to reach them?
At the moment I’ve had to put my business commitments above my love for cars. I’ve had to make a choice and reduce my collection by one.

Potential buyers are welcome to view the car evenings and weekends in Canary Wharf, London. For those who live far away there is the option for a virtual video tour accessible via a private link on YouTube. I would love to show you around the car and to drive it, but buyer test drives would be possible only after proof of funds and insurance.
