A delightful, completely restored MG TF 1250 Midget

Price: €36,995    Year: 1954          Mileage: 3548 (showing)

HISTORY FILE – Our charming MG TF 1250 Midget, chassis number: HDC16/2788 was produced in Abingdon in January 1954 as a UK home market car, and although being RHD, it somehow finds itself in the United States of America before being imported back to Europe in 1999. Staying within the German importing family until 2004, the car is sold to a Berlin owner who would possess it for just two short years before parting ways in 2006. The final and probably correct owner, would purchase the car in 2009 and complete a gradual, but exacting restoration that we are now delighted to present today. A nut and bolt, frame off restoration is evident in the below restoration pictures, and as so often said, is now better than when it left the factory for an incredible list price of just £780. In recent years, the avid MG collector and last owner, has simply found the entry and exit shuffle a touch taxing on the old knees, hence the departure. The cars history file, complete with FiA papers are now ready for the next MG custodian.

EXTERIOR – Now finished in Ford Apple red, the last owner has chosen well as the colour really suits the wee car nicely. It’s not perfect but it is relatively close to the cars original ‘dark red’ relating to the letter C in the cars chassis number. Viewed by many MG enthusiasts as the last car to use a so called traditional body style, our exquisite TF offers plenty of chrome and bling to keep clean over those long dark winter nights; all bright-work is in beautiful restored condition. As mentioned, the car is not perfect by any stretch of the imagination but, apart from a couple of little paint imperfections, it is utterly charming with its external beige leather piping. The black mohair all weather equipment is tight and in lovely condition with the restored frame holding everything together nicely. The side window frames are in almost unused condition and the additional headlights do not look out of place – at all.

INTERIOR – The previous owner has finished the car to a very high standard over his 10 year tenure and has taken time to get the colour combination just right. Separate tan leather seats combine well with new black carpets and a contrasting tan and red body coloured dashboard. Both matching leather door cards are in superb restored condition. The light coloured wooden steering wheel is period correct and not too obtrusive as one may initially think. Interestingly, seat belts have been recently fitted for a little more ’sure’ feeling. The car is also offered with tailor-made imitation sheepskin seat covers.

ENGINE & TRANSMISSION – Not a matching numbers example but, we rather think that the overall quality of restoration somewhat makes up for this. In recent months, the period correct engine has been compression tested by a local MG Marque specialist known to Cathedral Classics, who also reset the valves. Under the bonnet it is beautifully detailed and is testament to the level of restoration that’s taken place. Also freshly fitted is an additional battery master switch has been discretely fitted in the passenger foot-well; this can be also used as an engine immobiliser.

WHEELS, TYRES & BRAKES – The factory option wire wheels have recently been replaced with gleaming chrome wires on relatively new Toyo 330 - 165/80 R15 tyres and offer plenty of life with of course period winged knock-ons. The spare is a steel wire wheel. The hydraulic drum brakes take a little getting used to but, with practice, pull the car up adequately well.
