|Available for sale is this 1990 3600cc Guards Red Porsche 911 (964) Manual Carrera 4 Coupe.|
First registered at Porsche Centre Reading on the 1st of August 1990, this car has now covered just south of 90,500 miles and remains in great condition throughout. The service history traces this 911s through life whereabouts from Glasgow to Essex and now back ‘home’ in Reading. While in Essex the car was featured in an interesting magazine article, a copy of which will be included in the sale (Total 911, issue 154, June 2017. Photos attached).
From the history pack, I can see this car has been well looked after with no expense spared. As many will know, the late 80’s was a time of financial difficulty for Porsche and you will often see this reflected in some of the component seals and other consumables amongst a lot of 964s (oil leaks!) - Fortunately, in May 2015 at 81,046 miles, this 911 received a ‘full engine rebuild’ from Strasse. The rebuild consisted of removing the engine from the car, stripping the engine down to the cases, which were then split further in order to fit new big end bearings, main bearings, top & bottom end gasket sets, 6 piston rings, 4 intermediate shaft caps, 2 timing chains, 22 through bolt seals, 4 oil tubes, oil, oil filter and a clutch kit. As you’d expect, there are now no oil leaks/issues there.
More recent work includes new ignition HT leads, Idle actuator replacement, tin ware refresh, new rear bumper mounting fixtures, fluid changes and belt replacements…the usual service items for a car of this age and stature.
Touching on the service history more, the information pack for this car includes a folder of receipts recording work carried out, as well as all the MoT certificates through the years. The original ‘service/Owners’ manuals are present and in good condition, a great read – all great attributes to the ever-increasing value of these cars.
The bodywork is in good condition with no dents, corrosion or blemishes. Of course, there are a few stone chips present around the front of the rear arches and front bumper, absolutely nothing worth noting, merely a result of general road use over time. The car looks great with the genuine Porsche ‘cup’ style teardrop mirrors (original mirrors available if required). Complimenting the cup style mirrors are the 17” ‘Cup’ wheels, which have been fully refurbished, fitted with Continental Sport Contact 2’s which look fantastic. The brake callipers, peaking through the freshly presented wheels, in their original gloss black paint look great, I personally love the 80s Porsche font on these callipers. The brakes were one of the many great developments received by the 964, adding to the list of improvements made to the 911 generation in 1990. The brake disks and pads have minimal wear and so will give many more miles. Headlights are in excellent condition with no chips or cracks to the lenses, indicators etc are in good condition. The rear lights have the usual signs of sunlight consumption, some crazing has appeared around the inside edges. However, should the new owner wish for perfection, I do have a set of new lenses available should he or she desire (I never got around to fitting these myself as the damage does not impact function).
The car retains the original shock absorbers which perform well, no signs of wear or degradation to the damping. The geometry has been adjusted to mimic that of the 964 RS, giving great handling characteristics on the road yet retaining the plushness Porsche intended for this car.
The interior of this 964 is all original and very presentable, featuring a unique and sought-after red carpet. Which, personally, takes me back to ‘the good old days’ spent in my 1600cc Peugeot 205 GTI (red carpet) so perhaps I’m a little biased there! The ivory leather seats and door cards scream class while the red carpets remind you that this is a car designed for speed and precision. This particular 964 benefits from extended leather door trims, dashboard and steering wheel, finished in black. The driver’s instruments are in top condition with no fogging, scratches etc. The digital readouts are functioning well, giving outside temperature, average miles per gallon, distance to empty, including two trip computers. Oil (Druck) level, oil temperature and oil pressure gauges are functionable - while on the subject, this car holds textbook oil pressure in all running conditions. Tachometer, speedometer and clock all in good working condition - The quartz clock keeps impeccable time.
In summary, everything works as it should, this is a great example of a 964 ready to enjoy or further improve! It certainly looks great to me and, having driven many 911s, drives just as it should. A genuine reason for a reluctant sale.
