1989 Discovery Early Production Car For Sale

Dispatched to Caffyns Ltd of Lewes in Sussex, and registered on 13 November 1989. They used it for 6 months as their launch demonstration vehicle, in which time it accumulated 3785 miles. It found its first private owner on 20 March 1990.

The car was the subject of a magazine article in the November 2012 issue of Land Rover Monthly magazine when it was owned by Alan Mitchell of Londonderry in Northern Ireland. A copy of the magazine comes with the car.

The chassis, outriggers, sills and body mounts are all original and untouched. The chassis was professionally treated by wax injection and wax topcoat in 2009 at 30793 miles and this has served the vehicle well.

The body is quite remarkable. It is straight, refreshingly free of supermarket dings and the red shines very deeply. It retains its original and of course distinctive upswept decals (they are not later replacements). It has never been welded at any time. Inner wings both front and rear are original and rust free. If you know anything about Discovery 1s this is exceptional.

The interior is the familiar Conran blue fabric and has survived its 31 years very well. It is, as above, like a 6 month old car. The plastic grains are all sharp and not smoothed off by years of wear and cleaning. All the interior/ instrument bulbs work – very rare for a D1. The seats are protected by Land Rover waterproof seat covers. Unusually the car has one (only) front sunroof, believed to have been fitted by the supplying dealer. It does not leak and the headlining is clean and does not sag. Also fitted the optional 7 seat kit and Electric Pack (windows, mirrors and central locking). The car has a sett of rare 3 door alloys with new good year wrangler tyres and the even rarer plain black centre caps. I have the original steels also on original pattern wranglers. There is a full set of blue carpet and the original grey rubber matts.

The 200 Tdi is completely standard with the exception of a 300-Tdi engine cover which helps suppress the noise. It is a ‘working’ engine bay and has not been steam cleaned or detailed to within an inch of its life… a new owner could obviously do so if they wished.

Early production parts

One of the special things about this early vehicle is that it is fitted with some components that are specific to the early Discovery and characteristic of the well-known G WAC vehicles. For example it has the early dash with no demister vents, a narrower rear step and a smooth (ungrained) finish to sill trims, rear door handle and footwell side panels. It has the optional extra headrest covers.

Recently has had a full major service by a Classic Land Rover specialist. At the same time all the suspension has been replaced with brand new genuine OEM parts, steering box refurb.

Summary

The Discovery is now 31 years old. Original, non-molested examples are now rarer than 3 door Range Rovers. This is the best non-restored example in private ownership know today
