1998 Show Standard Ultra Rare Ford Scorpio Cosworth Ultima For Sale
The first time we saw the Scorpio name surface from the Ford Motor Company was in 1986. At this time Ford had recently launched its MK3 Granada range and Scorpio was used as the top of the line models - in essence a “Granada Scorpio”.
Ford discontinued the Granada range in 1994 and replaced it with simply a series of cars called the Scorpio launched at the Paris Motor Show that year. Never before in the history of Ford had one of its products received such a lukewarm reception and to say that it was a “Marmite” car was a vast understatement. There really was nobody in the in-between camp - you either absolutely loved them or you absolutely loathed them. The main area that came under criticism was (as quoted at the time) its “rather unfortunate looks, especially those big ugly bug eyed lights”. A real criticiser at the time was none other than our national treasure Top Gear and at this time (perhaps less so now) what was said here really was seen as gospel by many. In actual fact it was voted the 3rd worst car to own in their JDPower Customer Satisfaction Survey. Whether people liked the car or not it was one of those cars (like so many British Leyland products a couple of decades prior) people seemed to love to hate, irrespective of whether they had experience of them or not.
The range comprised of “Executive” (the base model), then a familiar to ford lovers “Ghia” trim level, and then at the top of the range was the “Ultima” - a luxurious captains lounge on wheels. Various engines were offered by Ford ranging from a very reliable if slightly lack lustre 2. 0, a 2. 3, and then a 2. 9 V6. There was one other engine offered but that warrants a section to itself below.
What Bradley James Classics are proud to offer you here then is the absolute top of the range Ford Scorpio - so rare its almost mythical - the Ultima 2. 9 V6 24V Cosworth version. Now if that doesn't get the juices flowing then we do not know what will! The 2. 9V6 version was never a slouch but when Ford handed it over to Cosworth the end result was positively sparkling and that breathed upon engine coupled with the reworked and uprated sports suspension mean that this car goes and handles better than anything of this size has the right to. It is a very very special motor car.
There were hardly any made due to their exorbitant at the time cost and so very few remain today and certainly none in the condition you see before you here. Recognised as something very special when bought new it has been cosseted and pampered to within an inch of its life for all of its years. It was owned from new by Ford as probably a Directors car and then owned by a father then son for many many years. The condition is remarkable with every panel being super straight and free from dents scratches or corrosion. Inside is a sumptuous gentleman's club on wheels with a specification that would be revered today never mind in 1998 including all round electric windows and mirrors, electric sunroof, climate control, electric heated leather seats, radio cassette and cd multi changer, cruise control etc etc - there were no options left to tick in a Scorpio Ultima Cosworth!!
But where this car really shines and 100% accounts for the way in which it has survived and the way it drives (just like it did new) is down to the way in which this car has been maintained and serviced. Most cars are serviced at the dealer for the first few years then pass on to a few independent garages however not so with R75FVX - it has actually been serviced at the supplying dealer (Gowrings of Basingstoke) its entire life and any maintenance work carried out was done there as well, supported by the full bookpack and service book and a folder full of receipts. The original brochure is in the history file as are its original THREE keys. In short, this Scorpio wants for nothing and its 98, 000 miles could easily pass for 19, 000.
Age has softened the Scorpio. Here at Bradley James Classics we absolutely love them. The dislike for these when new kept production numbers down, which in turn has kept survival rates particularly sparse, therefore meaning that the ultimate wolf in sheeps clothing version you see here today has almost gained white elephant status now. It will go down very well at any car show and whether people like or loathe it , it will always draw a crowd and be a talking point. Any Ford enthusiast will be sorry to miss this one - i would highly recommend viewing as pondering too long over this one will see many years of remorse at a missed opportunity and as can be seen with all other Fords to carry the Cosworth Moniker …. who knows where the value will rocket to in years to come.
We offer a part exchange service and full UK delivery at sensible rates.
