My Yamaha RD400E was restored in early 1994 and has been in my ownership for the last 27 years, covering only 10,000 miles. It has been maintained in great condition and used occasionally for local bike meets and rides out. This is a matching numbers bike which underwent a total nut and bolt restoration. Back then it was showing 27,000 miles on the clock. The motor was rebuilt to a standard state of tune for reliability and has always been run on pre-mix rather than the standard oil pump/autolube. The crank was rebuilt at SEP (Service Exchange Parts) in Kegworth, Derbyshire. We also cleared out Len Manchester’s (Yamaha dealer in Melton Mowbray, Leicestershire) parts department of most of their genuine Yamaha spares which were still available at the time. (I still have all of the original receipts etc). It is now showing 37,300 miles.

It was intended as a tasteful cafe racer/special with all aluminium parts polished rather than the standard satin black, a remodelled rear light recess and racing hump seat pad/cover, original Allspeed exhausts, Raask rear sets, flat bars, Marzocchi piggy back shocks and a subtle metallic British Racing Green with masked and painted silver logos. The aim was to create something a little different to the standard restoration.

The bike has had regular gear box oil and brake fluid changes and general maintenance/fettling over the years, including a top end refresh with new pistons, rings and little ends, plus rear wheel and head race bearings in 2015. It runs great, idles evenly, starts first time and when fully warmed up pulls ferociously once it hits the power band at 6000rpm, right up to the redline, although it's happy being ridden lazily too. Cosmetically it looks superb, as the pics demonstrate (taken last week) as fresh as it rolled out of the garage 27 years ago, though having never seen rain and covering only 10k miles, it’s not surprising. It was at various times on SORN and was last MOT'd in 2019 and is now registered as a Historic Vehicle.

The bike has featured in magazines, including Performance Bikes in 1994, Motorcycle Mechanics in 1995 and Classic Motorcycle Mechanics last year and has always garnered favourable reactions and interest. I have other bikes in the garage that need using and have decided to see what interest is out there. Built in an era when friends had RDs and LCs, I rarely get the chance to ride it; the time has come for someone else who loves these addictive 2-strokes to enjoy it.

If you want standard nut and bolt, rivet counter originality, there are examples out there to choose from; however if you want something a little different, a total one-off, built and finished to a high standard, you will not be disappointed.

The bike can be inspected, heard running, tyres kicked and generally appraised. If you want a test ride, I will need the full asking price in £20s in my hand before you go and I will follow along. Alternatively, I can ride the bike and you can follow closely. Standard stuff. No swaps or silly offers thankyou.

Any queries, questions, info or more hi res images or walk-round video of it running, please ask.
