Fully restored 1970 Husqvarna 400 cross.
The bike was imported from the States where it was originally sold to the Nelson brothers.The bike started off as a good solid base for a restoration with the frame requiring no welding except where the chain had worn through the rubber wear pad and dressing up the steering stops. Missing and non standard parts were sourced and replaced as necessary. The bike is a 4 speed but was converted to an 8 speed. The Nelson brothers were very much involved in Desert racing and there are some interesting youtube videos of them. I have the original paperwork for the bike. It is an early bike so is fitted with the steel rear mudguard and 32mm Bing side float carburetor. The engine was fully rebuilt with new piston, con rod, all bearings replaced with FAG or SKF (the cases were in excellent condition with no need for machining or remedial work)and new clutch plates were fitted.The gearbox is in excellent condition with a new mainshaft and a second and third gear. The Bing carburetor has been completely overhauled with a new slide, needle, needle jet etc.
Ignition is by an original NOS Femsa points system and a modern pattern coil.
Frame re-sprayed with 2 pack in the correct grace silver.It also has the original side stand fitted. Engine and hubs stove enamelled with new bearings and seals. The original flanged Akront rims have been re-polished and the wheels rebuilt with the original cloverleaf spokes and nipples which were bright zinc and nickel plated respectively. The forks were rebuilt with new seals and front alloy mudguard fitted with front mudflap and held on with the correct lozenge shaped washers. New sprockets and correct OEM Renold chain have been fitted.
Many of the bolts are the original Bufo and all bolts and fixings have been re-plated. Any bolts that are not Bufo have been replaced with stainless. Original style Red nyloc nuts have been used throughout.
Magura grips and controls (throttle is the rare steel tubed type) with oiler cables. All cables and wires held in using original style metal cable ties. Handle bars are correct pattern low bar pattern for pre 71 bikes.
Seat re-plated and recovered with the correct thin piping. Tank dent free and re plated and then painted in 2 pack in red with correct decals. Chrome panel is also the right shape and in the correct position. NOS Girling shocks fitted with correct style chrome shrouds. Tyres are Trelleborg at the front and Mitas at the rear (same pattern as the Trelleborg). Unfortunately the rear is a 4.50 x 18 and a tad too wide to fit the chain guard though this can be supplied.
The bike starts really easily and runs well with no oil leaks(engine cases lapped prior to assembly). I have restored a number of these 4 speed bikes and was fortunate to have a bike featured in Classic Dirt Bike a few years ago after it won best scrambler at the Stafford show.
