Description:

The Land Rover ‘Ninety’ was launched in 1984, shortly after the ‘One Ten’ in 1983. Both were adopted by the Armed Forces a couple of years later, to carry on the role that the Series III 109” and 88” models had served so well. The vehicles were originally powered by the bullet-proof, but slow ‘12J’ naturally aspirated 2.5 litre diesel engine, but later the need for an Extra Heavy Duty (XD) variant arose to cope with the greater demands in the operational theatre. The Defender XD aka ‘Wolf’, was fitted with upgrades including an uprated chassis and rear axle, roll over protection as well as the more powerful 300Tdi engine.

This particular vehicle (affectionately known as ‘Wolfie’!) is a 1997 example, released from the MoD in 2011 and was later acquired by the current owner with the intention of having it fully restored. Our good friend and restoration guru was chosen to undertake the work to a high standard, stripping the vehicle right down to its chassis. All the old paint and surface rust was stripped off, painted and undersealed for future protection; the bulkhead received the same treatment being painted with truck bed liner in the lower engine bay and footwell areas for extra durability – likewise with the rear tub interior. The mechanicals were gone through with all new seals, gaskets, bearings, belts and brakes. It was decided to mildly ‘civilianise’ the vehicle by painting the bodywork in Land Rover Keswick Green to make it stand out from the crowd. Only 1700 miles have been covered since completion in 2018, but now unfortunately the owner has a change of circumstances meaning it is time for ‘Wolfie’ to find a new home.

Jumping into the driver’s seat, the ‘bomb-proof’ 300Tdi easily fires up from cold and settles into a smooth idle. Pulling away, the power delivery is smooth with no untoward smoke, plus all gears and low/high ranges working as they should. The steering is nice and tight, and the all-wheel disc brakes pull the vehicle up straight.

Having been recently rebuilt; corrosion is not going to be a problem any time soon if looked after. The body work is fantastic with nice straight panels and a superb professional paint job with only one or two very minor stone chips/marks from light use. All the bonnet mounted tools are there including the tow strop, and the WMIK/‘Blindo’ heavy duty alloy wheels are in good condition with only some light scratches/marks, having not been refurbished themselves. The hard top roof and rear door were recently added, having had the PVC soft top fitted previously – all the fittings/cleats are present to be able to swap back to a soft top hood if you so wish.

The hose-out, squaddie-proof interior is good, with two grey vinyl seats and locking cubby box up front plus two folding bench seats in the rear. The front footwells are fitted a moulded rubber mat set, and the cubby box contains the audio system headunit handily hidden away inside. The dashboard is in good condition and still has the centre-mounted military lighting switch and map light present for those covert trips to the shops!

The vehicle was first registered with the DVLA in May 2018, and the odometer reads 1706 miles. We cannot verify the mileage to be correct as the original speedometer would have been in kilometres - however the first MoT suggests it may have read around 39,000km. The vehicle will come with 12 months MoT and a DVLA issued registration number (the current private reg. is not included). This truck is ready to be used and enjoyed, whether it be displaying it at summer car shows or putting it to work! If you are interested in the vehicle, please do get in touch.
