The first French car to achieve 1 million sales
An elegant, stylish and revolutionary supermini
Largely Ferdinand Porsche designed and developed
Developed in relative secrecy during World War 2 as the next small Renault to replace the Juvaquatre, the 750 or 4CV was a rather revolutionary little car. Far more unconventional in design compared with its predecessor, the 750 was rear engine and partially owing to its Ferdinand Porsche influence, is often compared to the Beetle, much to the annoyance of Renault chairman from 1945 and resistance hero Pierre Lefaucheux who was heavily involved in the development and testing of the car.
Unveiled in 1946 and launched in 1947, the little car proved to be a big success over the years despite a very slow few first years, due to the state of the French economy. Production lasted between 1947 and 1961 and in this relatively brief time, a very impressive 1. 1 million cars were produced, making it the first French car to sell over 1 million units. Production wasn’t only limited to Billancourt in France but also in the UK in Acton, Sydney in Australia as well as Japan and Spain.
Due to their engine-placement, for a car of the period, steering is rather light and earlier cars had an exceedingly fast steering ratio with only 2 ¼ turns of the wheel from lock to lock, making for a surprisingly fun and engaging car to drive. As a result of this as well as their capacity for modifying, many were raced and would also be the basis for Alpine’s first model, the Alpine A106, the first in a long and successful lineage of lightweight, rear-engined, lightweight sports cars.
Our fine 1062 Sport example was delivered new in 1954 to the Agence de Belge Renault Dealer In Brussels and still retains the round dealer placque on the rear engine lid. The car is presented in beautiful original condition with original paintwork and interior, a brilliantly preserved car. It also comes with an impressive amount of paperwork including the original guarantee card from the dealer, original handbook and more. The car runs and drives wonderfully well and is all in all a great car. It has been well loved throughout its life with one if its owners having owned the car for decades, between the 1960s to the late 2000s. If you’re looking for a 4CV, this is undoubtedly one of the best and most genuine examples you could wish to find, certainly one of the very best in the UK if not in Europe.
