1965 VW Splitscreen Sundial Camper 2.1 litre

I’ve owned this van since 2004 and during that time it’s had a steady program of sensible upgrades over the original.

The Sundial is basically a Californian copy of the Westy SO23 but with a tin top and built from a standard Panel Van base. They were all delivered in Pearl White and contained the usual mid 1960s fitted units, cool box and fold down bed. The windows were proprietary aluminium Hehr units as fitted to contemporary Airstream trailers. So they are the original Californian Camper. I bought mine from Ventura California where it led a gentle life. Speedo reads 37,500 miles but the engine probably hasn’t done 10k. Van has been maintained rather than restored.

Engine:
2.1 litre bored and stroked Type 1 engine built from all new parts (including cases) from John Maher. All steel bottom end, twin Dell Orto downdraught carbs. Built for smooth low down power with an Engle 110 cam so it’s a total pussycat. It has 2 oil coolers, alternator and working Cruise Control.
On an accurate rolling road this engine delivered more than 120bhp and has a torque curve like an iron bar. Custom exhaust system in stainless.

Gearbox;
Fitted a 1302 Super Beetle unit from Custom Speed Parts in Germany. No hub reduction boxes so it’ll cruise at 75 and pull off the 80mph speedo.

Brakes & Steering:
Custom Speed Parts drilled front discs
Creative Engineering front steering rack conversion

Exterior:
Stainless Steel bumpers. Not chrome.
Twin driving lamps, slaved to the main beam with an isolate switch.
EMPI 5 spoke wheels in aluminium
Polished Creative Engineering Safari Windows
No rust, nice paint.

Interior:
Blaupunkt Derby 660 Picnic Radio - car radio that you can then use as a remote transistor radio when you have a picnic - hideously rare now. I also have a spare radio for spares or whatever.
Fitted front carpets
Front re-trim in brick red/basketweave.
EMPI fitted toolkit
Huge leisure battery with solar charging system and split charge relay.
Coolbox has been converted into a fridge using a 12 volt Isotherm marine refrigeration unit.
Drop down DVD player in the back

Extra, Extras:
I have a replica SO42 Big Top camping tent that I made. It looks fabulous and is perfectly practical.

I have a bespoke tow bar attachment that actually works if you want to pull a trailer or mount a huge bike rack. It braces the entire rear of the vehicle back to the torsion bar tube, currently not fitted as not needed.

Teak slatted roof rack.
