History File - This 1973 ‘vintage’ – Lancia Berlina 2000 i. e. Type: 820-416 boasts just 3 owners with one of them actually owning the car twice! Initially sold by a Düsseldorf Fiat/ Lancia dealer who had the car for a year, they would register it on the 7th September 1973 it to its first owner who would retain the car for an incredible 40 years! Herr Wilhelm Baldus would become well known within the Lancia Club scene in Germany with the cars history file containing a lovely warm story about the man, his wife Irene and his beloved Lancia’s. (There were several). But it would be his Berlina that would bring much joy along with Lancia’s now infamous rust problems in equal measures. Within a year the rust had appeared and was subsequently repaired but, would return within a year again! Utterly disgusted by the work carried out, Herr Baldus, decided to store the car for almost 20 years preserving essentially the interior and the low kilometers that we see today. In 1995 the car would re-emerge and was immediately subjected to – this time - a quality full body restoration but, going forward, would still be driven sparingly. Herr Baldus sadly passed away in 2014 with his wife Irene tasked with disposing the cars. The second owner, known to Cathedral Classics, following lengthy discussions with Frau Baldus, successfully purchased the car in 2014 only to sell it one year later. Quickly realising his error, he would pursue the car to eventually buy it back in 2018. To the third owner’s credit, he had cosmetically improved the car once again to the wonderful condition we witness today. A comprehensive history file accompanies the car with numerous invoices from both the second and third owners makes fascinating reading not just for Lancia aficionados but, all classic car fans alike. An original sales brochure and Berlina Handbook add to the whole charm and history of this great example. With just 5475 Berlina 2000 i. e. examples ever built, this is an exceptional and indeed now rare car.
Exterior – Commonly referred to by many as “the last real Lancia” the Berlina was the Italian manufacturer’s flagship saloon for the period. Unassuming on so many levels, our superb low kilometer example (just 18, 408 km’s) oozes charm and elegance. Restored on two occasions by the initial owner of some 40 years, this delightful example would receive refreshing work to the sills, including a complete course of cavity wax sealing in 2015. Both the front window standard equipment “draft excluders” are in perfect condition and fit well into the cars all-round original glass. And with restoration now complete, the result is simply wonderful and ready to be enjoyed by any potential custodian. The car displays an even Bianco Saratoga paint finish and will not disappoint any new potential owner.
Interior – This is easily the highlight of the car! Having been stored for almost 20 years between 1976 and 1995 by the first owner, it has essentially preserved the car beautifully well. A complete array of instruments is framed by mahogany and ebony trim; noteworthy is the anti-splinter wooden steering wheel, all of which are like new condition. The seats and door panel trim are covered in velvet which, for the period, was a ridiculously high level of specification. Leather was a factory option but, frankly, why would you bother? The rear window is electrically heated and fitted with standard equipment transparent cloth sun-curtains which are still in wonderful original condition today. The flooring element of the original Moquette carpet has now been replaced - professionally done - with quality sound proof material beneath. The original Blaupunkt radio is in place, but is sadly inoperable. The original headlining is perfect and just as it left the factory.
Engine & Transmission – The 2000 i. e. used the 1991 cc 4 cylinder boxer engine, with this particular example combined with Bosch D-type electronic fuel injection and a ZF (dog-leg) 5-speed gearbox. The overall performance is astonishing, particularly compared to other cars for the period; boasting 125ps it was almost unparalleled and essentially targeted at BMW and Alfa Romeo competitors. Front wheel drive, independent suspension and ZF power steering load this amazing car to a level of specification that the average British motorist for the period could only dream of. This example drives superbly well following regular maintenance by both second and third owners.
Wheels, Brakes & Tyres – The original standard steel wheels and correct Lancia emblem hubcaps were sandblast restored and painted in 2017 and subsequently covered with quality Dunlop SP Sport 174/ 80 R14 tyres. At the same time, a complete (all-round discs) brake overhaul would take place setting the car in good stead.
