The magnificent one-two victory at the inaugural Imola 200 in April 1972 was a landmark win for Ducati. Prior to Imola Ducati was a relatively small and unknown Italian manufacturer, associated primarily with smaller capacity single cylinder bikes. When Ducati trounced everyone at Imola, including Giacomo Agostini’s MV Agusta, they were finally taken seriously.

As Formula 750 was a production-based class, the recently released 750 GT formed the basis of the factory Imola racers. Special features included desmodromic cylinder heads, 40 mm Dell’Orto carburettors and twin plug ignition. As Imola had predominantly left hand corners the exhaust included a high pipe on the left, but retained a low pipe on the right. The power was a claimed 84 horsepower at 8, 800 rpm, and the desmodromic engine was safe to 9, 200 rpm. To accommodate Dunlop racing tyres an 18-inch front wheel replaced the production 19-inch, and triple Lockheed discs handled the braking duties.  The dry weight of the racer was only 178 kg, and they were reputed to pull the tallest available gearing, giving 272 km/ h.

On race day, 70, 000 spectators crammed into Autodromo Dino Ferrari at Imola. Although works machines from MV Agusta, Honda, Norton, Moto Guzzi, Triumph and BSA, alongside factory supported Kawasaki, Laverda, Suzuki and BMW, Ducati was confident of victory. Imola was in their back yard and only a brief skid down the Autostrada from Bologna. Ultimately British rider Paul Smart led home teammate Bruno Spaggiari, providing Ducati a dominating victory. The race speed over 200 miles had been an astonishing 157. 35 km/ h, with the fastest lap of 161. 11 km/ h shared equally by Smart, Spaggiari, and Agostini.

Since that remarkable day at Imola in 1972 many production round-case 750s have been converted into replicas of the race bikes. This example began life as a 1973 750 Sport. Originally sold in the USA it had a long racing career before a four-year restoration was undertaken in Australia. The round-case engine was rebuilt by a top bevel engineer and includes 900cc barrels and pistons and desmodromic cylinder heads. The exhaust system and fairing are patterned on the 1972 Imola racer, and the braking system upgraded to 750 SS spec-twin Scarab discs on the front and a Lockheed disc on the rear. The fairing carries Swiss rider Bruno Kneubühler’s number “86” as used in the 1973 Imola 200. Unlike most Imola replicas this example is street legal, with endurance style twin headlamps. With fewer than 100 km covered since the restoration this motorcycle performs as well as it looks, emitting a beautiful sound from the Imola exhausts. Currently registered in Queensland the import documents are available and the Veglia odometer displays 59698 km.
