Undoubtedly it was Paul Smart’s famous victory at Imola on Sunday 23rd April 1972 that catapulted Ducati and their new V-twin into modern motorcycling. The 750 cc Superbike category was becoming more important to all the major manufacturers, so Ducati’s win was of immense commercial significance for the relatively small Italian firm.
As it was a track with sweeping curves and variable surfaces Imola favoured handling over horsepower and suited the Ducatis. Most of the cycle parts remained close to stock – even the centre stand lugs were retained! Racing upgrades included triple Lockheed disc brakes, desmodromic cylinder heads, and a pair of huge Dell’Orto PHM 40 mm carburettors. Ducati engaged Bruno Spaggiari, who knew Imola well and had raced for them since the 1950s and also offered a ride to British rider Paul Smart. On race day Giacomo Agostini took off, leading the way on his factory MV Agusta four-cylinder. Then the fourth lap came around. Smart had passed Agostini, followed by Spaggiari one lap later. After that it was Ducati 1st and 2nd all the way to the finish.
This replica of Smart’s 1972 Imola 200 winner began life as a seventh series 1973 750 GT. Built towards the end of 1973 as a 1974 model, unlike the 1972 racer this series had a Ceriani front fork and Brembo disc brake. Purchased by the current owner in November 2007, extensive modifications were undertaken to create a personal recreation of an original 1972/73 Imola factory racer. An SS half fairing was fitted, the headstock fairing mount requiring the frame number be restamped on the left rear downtube (as on a genuine Super Sport). The high-rise exhaust system replicates the 1973 version, while the fibreglass tank and one-off seat, built to suit the wider 750 GT rear subframe, are derived from the 1972 version. While retaining the rear drum brake, a second Brembo drilled disc was added at the front. Other custom features include an aftermarket 18-inch front wheel, later Marzocchi oleo-pneumatic shock absorbers, aftermarket rear-set footpegs and a 900 SS kick-start lever. The engine remains as a standard “valve-spring” 750 GT.
This bike was completed in 2018 and was registered on club plates. Considering the value of a genuine 750 SS “green frame” today, this recreation offers superb value. This motorcycle is sold unregistered.
