This rather nice Alvis Special started life as a TA14 saloon, body number M1462, which was delivered to Leedhams (York) ltd in July 1949 according to the Alvis Ltd Car Record that is in the file. The Alvis Club lost track of the car in the mid Sixties and it resurfaced in 1985 when they assisted the then owner in retaining its original registration number, EDN690.
The Alvis was acquired by a friend of the family in 1990 as a part built Special. He set about rebuilding the mechanicals, including having the original engine fully rebuilt, and he eventually returned it to the road in 1996 and used and enjoyed the car until a few years ago.
It is built on a steel frame with an aluminium clad body and currently has a full windscreen fitted. It also comes with aero screens for those who like bugs in their teeth. It rides on 17" Alvis wire wheels, telescopic shock aborbers are fitted at the front with the standard set up at the rear, and has the original drum brakes all round which are more than adequate with the lighter body. The bucket seats, which slide backwards and forwards easily, are trimmed in leather, and there are modern indicators.
A four speed gearbox is mated to the original TA14 engine.
There is a large history file full of invoices, drawings, photographs and handwritten notes about the car over the last twenty five years.
What with work and other cars, our friend never quite got around to trimming the Special. After a few years of inactivity, it was acquired by a local enthusiast and re-commissioned. He also fully trimmed it, fitted rubber matting to the floor and added a door to the nearside to make getting in and out a little more graceful.
The car drives very nicely and looks rather stylish.
