Background
The Honda CB500 four was produced from 1971 to 1978 but was replaced in the US market by the CB550 in 1974. It has a 498 cc single overhead cam four cylinder four stoke motor producing a claimed 50 bhp, though some tests suggested 48 bhp was nearer the mark.
It had a top speed of around 115 mph and was powerful enough to be a high-speed tourer for two people in its day. With a weight of around 450 lbs it fitted nicely into the middleweight category of bikes and was a success with critics and the public alike. Mile per gallon of between 40 and 50 was about par for the course back then.
In 1972 Motorcycle Mechanics referred to it as one of the ‘show stealers’. It even won the 1973 500cc production TT race meaning this was a successful bike in all senses.
The four into four style of exhaust mirrored the styling of the larger CB750 though the exhausts themselves featured a trumpet shaped final section (often referred to as ‘tulip pipes’) which was carried on with the CB550.
It had a single front hydraulic disc and a rear drum brake like its larger brother but also featured a wet sump instead of the dry sump of the earlier 750 motor.
CB500 fours are still in demand today and many are restored to provide a middleweight bike with a smooth, willing and reliable engine, no major handling vices and a not too heavy bike which makes owning and riding one a good choice for many classic bikers.

Here is my Honda CL70 that I’ve used on the NACC runs. Restored by the previous owner who hadn’t passed his test so fitted a 50cc barrel and piston so he could ride it legally, this never bothered me as it’s still a capable little bike. I had an engine skid plate made just to protect the engine more from the weather ...
