In 1922, Talbot-Darracq's cars were re-branded 'Talbot'. The firm built prestigious 15 and 24hp models, which succeeded the Darracqs with their sleeve-valved engines. In 1934, Anthony Lago took over the factories, then in a difficult position. The strikes due to the great financial crisis had severely affected the company's cash flow. Nonetheless, Talbot-Lago then developed a full range of touring cars, while remaining very active in competition. For 1935, the existing range continued in production but from 1936 these were steadily replaced with cars designed by Walter Becchia, featuring transverse leaf-sprung independent suspension. These included the 4-cylinder 2323 cc Talbot Type T4 "Minor", a surprise introduction at the 1937 Paris Motor Show, and the 6-cylinder 2, 696 cc Talbot "Cadette-15", along with and the 6-cylinder 2, 996 cc or 3, 996 cc Talbot "Major" and its long-wheelbase version, the Talbot "Master": these were classified as Touring cars.
There was also in the second half of the 1930s a range of Sporting cars which started with the Talbot "Baby-15", mechanically the same as the "Cadette-15" but using a shorter slightly lighter chassis. The Sporting Cars range centred on the 6-cylinder 2, 996 cc or 3, 996 cc Talbot "Baby" and also included the 3, 996 cc 23 and sporting Lago-Spéciale and Lago-SS models, respectively with two and three carburettors, and corresponding increases in power and performance. The most frequently specified body for the Lago-SS was built by Figoni et Falaschi, and featured a particularly eye-catching aerodynamic form. Lago was an excellent engineer who developed the existing six-cylinder engine into a high-performance 4-litre one. The sporting six-cylinder models had a great racing history. The bodies—such as of the T150 coupé—were made by excellent coachbuilders such as Figoni et Falaschi or Saoutchik.
The Baby 15 presented here dates from 1939, and according to the French Club, the chassis started life as a Fixed head Coupe, so was probably converted in period like many similar pre war cars. It was acquired by its previous owner in 2016 as a replacement for his Mercedes 300 SL Roadster. This attractive cabriolet was evidently the subject of an older restoration some 30 years ago and appears to have spent most of its life in France. The car will come UK Registered. The paintwork has aged nicely, while the interior is simply patinated, with attractive burgundy leather seats and carpets. The engine starts and runs very well indeed and The manual gearbox also works perfectly. The car is in very good overall condition and will delight a collector who wants to drive the car and take it on long trips. You do not have to make any allowances for the age of the car, the engine is very powerful and will easily keep up with modern traffic and the Factory body has all the film star good looks of Talbot-Lago's of the era without the Million Pound Price tag of Figoni and Falaschi models!
