|This is an old half scale electric Lotus 7, which I believe was originally built in the early 1980s.|
Its actually a Grasshopper manufactured by BWE Sportscars as a scaled down childs version of their full-size Locust kit car. Its a very solid, impressive and striking little car and larger than you might think at 75" (1.9m) long and 38” (96cm) wide.
BWE ceased trading long ago so these kits are no longer available and these little cars very rarely come up for sale.
This one has been in storage for many years and, as you can see in the photos it is now in need of some love and restoration to bring it back to its former glory. That said, it does have a brand new aluminium bonnet.
The rear wheels are chain driven from a 12v motor in the back. With a battery connected the motor does seem to work and the car moves under it’s own power. Its slow so I expect the motor needs some love too.
The steering is a simple mechanical arrangement and works fine.
One of the tyres has a slow puncture but the other 3 are OK.
The body is plywood, clad in aluminium with a painted GRP nose cone and wheel arches
There are floor mounted pedals for the accelerator and brake
Its a perfect winter/lockdown workshop project. Rebuild it to match your real Lotus 7, a Caterham, upgrade it with some mobility scooter components or even a little go kart engine, the possibilities are endless!
I expect that serious buyers will want to come and view it first hand to see exactly whats what but, in these socially distanced/lockdown times I’m very happy to provide any additional photos you need if you want to buy it without viewing in person.
Equally I’m very happy to accommodate collection by courier etc.
