This 1909 Pierce Four is a remarkable motorcycle. It is also one of the less than 35-40 Pierce Fours produced in 1909. It is a true gem of the American motorcycle industry. The Pierce Four was the first American 4-cylinder motorcycle, and used a distinctive chassis that set it apart from any other motorcycle of the time. In 1908 Percy Pierce traveled to Europe in search of the best in the world motorcycle industry, and was impressed by the Belgian 4-cylinder FN. No American company was producing a 4-cylinder motorcycle at the time, so Percy brought a 1908 FN 4 to the Pierce factory, where it was closely studied. Pierce did not reverse engineer the FN, but he did get inspired and made improvements that made the Pierce Four a better and faster machine. With a completed new design, Percy Pierce founded Pierce Motorcycle Company in 1909. The first Pierce Fours of 1909 had no single-speed clutch, but, for 1910-13, a 2-speed transmission and clutch were added, Then the frames were different to accommodate the two speeds. They also differed in the diameter of the cylinders, the diameter of the steering wheels, the carburettor, which although in both models it was a breeze, in 1909 the admission was vertical and then horizontal. Bosch magnet connected vertically to the distribution box, then Hertz magnet connected to a horizontal visor. Holding the pedals vertical, then horizontal. Drain tap, different gasoline and oil, and some other details. All this makes it possible to speak of two models: those of 1909 and the following of 1910-13. This 1909 Pierce is preserved in its original state. It was only necessary to place the fenders, pedals and the front fork to complete it. Some of them in original condition have been auctioned from 1910 to 14, but not a genuine one from 1909, making this a unique opportunity to own an exceptional piece. 169.000e
