This gorgeous 'splitty' bus is guaranteed to put a smile on the face of anyone who sees it.
VW's iconic Type 2 Split Screen (T1) Kombi conjures up the memories of family holidays, road trips and adventures for generations of folk all over the world.
You'd be hard pushed to find a better one than this; it's had a fortune invested and needs for nothing - except a new owner to enjoy the fruits of someone else's labour and expense. Sourcing a solid bus to start a build and then executing it to this level would cost far in excess of the asking price here.
This is a very late T1 example; German production of the T1 ceased in 1967 when the T2 'Bay Window' was introduced, but the Hanover factory sent all the T1 fabrication machinery and equipment to VW of Brazil where Split Screen builds continued until 1975 - the year of this bus. It was imported into the UK in August 2008.
It's a 15-window 'DeLuxe' and features the rear 'wrap-around' side windows, not seen on the European versions (they had to make do with 13 windows), narrow rear tailgate and the double cargo doors on the passenger side.
An extensive refurbishment and rebuild with invoices totalling more than £26,500 was carried out in 2016. Major attention was paid to the bodywork and paint; this bus sports a retro two-tone finish in Velvet green over cream with 'Samba' style trims. The already enhanced 1,500 cc engine received Dell'Orto carbs with CB Performance filters and linkage kit, plus a new Vintage Speed stainless exhaust system. The gearbox was completely stripped and rebuilt. Other upgrades include a Creative Engineering steering rack conversion and CSP Front brake disc upgrade plus fuel lines, ignition system parts, wiring, lights, electrics etc. The results are an old school vehicle which is totally usable on today's roads.
The cab is furnished with cream and light beige vinyl and 'Safari' style opening split screen windows have been fitted. Open the double side doors and you'll find opposing bench seats with cushions which could convert into a bed, a table (which can be removed and used outside), various storage cupboards and cubbies, curtains and a chequered vinyl floor. It also has a custom made full length roof rack.
