Heritage Bodyshell MGB Roadsters are very few and far between – particularly cars which have been built with a high degree of care and attention. This car has been built to a very high standard and is a great investment - prices of these cars are certainly on the rise. I challenge you to find a nicer Heritage bodyshell car for less money! Being a desirable Mk2, it’s the best of both worlds – the stunning looks of the early cars, particularly in the interior department; and the reliability of the later 5-bearing engines and various other upgrades. They really are the ones to have!
The car was rebuilt in the late nineties using a heritage shell, supplied ready-painted by the MGOC. Considering it’s now over twenty years since the restoration was done, it still looks very fresh indeed – testament to the quality of work carried out at the time. The car is finished in British Racing Green, and is fitted with chrome wire wheels.
The majority of components have been either refurbished or replaced with new items – not always the case with some Heritage builds! The quality of paint prep and finish was clearly very good, and has lasted superbly. There is absolutely no bubbling on the wing-top seams an the car has an even and deep finish throughout. Obviously because the car has been used (around 12, 000 miles since the rebuild), there are a few VERY minor marks here and there, so please don’t expect it to be a concourse show car – if that was the case, I’d be asking £20, 000+! However I’m sure you won’t be disappointed – I am very fussy in my appraisal. If you’re looking for a super solid, reliable car that you’re not afraid to take on club runs and touring further afield, then this is probably the car for you.
It’s worth noting that the bonnet, doors and bootlid were all new panels at the time of the build – something that wasn’t usually the case on these earlier Heritage builds. The chromework is in good order all round and fits well – to me, it looks like they are original bumpers that have been rechromed, rather than the cheap repro items available today. The depth of finish is excellent.
Structurally, of course, thanks to the new shell, it’s all fine with no welding repairs anywhere – and no need for any in the near future, either! The car is body colour in the wheelarches and underneath, it hasn’t been doused with underseal, so you can clearly see that everywhere is tip-top.
The interior is also in very good order. The seat covers (correct for a 1969 car) are in great condition, as are the door cards, dashboard, etc. The black carpet set looks good and the banjo steering wheel finishes the interior off to perfection. The car is fitted with a Packaway type hood, the roof was replaced at the time of rebuild and still fits nicely, and the frame is in good order. I much prefer the cleaner lines when a packaway hood is removed – it gives a much nicer 50s/ 60s classic look to the car.
The engine bay is very clean indeed - the paint on the inner wings is as good as the paint on the outside of the car. A good clean and quick detail would have it looking absolutely fantastic without too much effort. I haven’t tarted it up, so you can see that the car has been well kept. Like I said, the car has been built with fantastic attention to detail.
Mechanically, all appears to be in fine fettle. I have taken the for an MOT and it passed with no advisories. Of course, I have been right through the car to ensure continued reliability – it’s had a full service, including a carburettor rebuild with new needles fitted, a new clutch slave cylinder, and various other minor bits and bobs. I noticed that the radiator had a VERY slight weep when under pressure so a brand new replacement has been fitted.
The car drives nicely - there is no slop in the drivetrain - it’s a joy to drive! The engine fires up readily, and ticks over with good oil pressure both cold and hot. You’ll see in the pictures that K&N air filters are also fitted. The car stops well, there is no untoward play in the front suspension, and the car sits square and level. The overdrive performs flawlessly - there are no whines from the gearbox or rear axle, either. All of the electrics work correctly. The chrome wire wheels are in good order with only very minor pitting, the spare is also a chrome wire and looks to be unused.
I purchased the car from a garage owner who had acquired the car 7 or 8 years ago, for his own personal collection. He bought it from a long-term customer who had sadly become terminally ill. For this reason, there is very little in the way of bills and receipts for the restoration – but rest assured that upon viewing the car you’ll see exactly what’s been done. The body shell has its Heritage number tag. You can see from the MOT History that the car has been MOT’d every year without issue, and clearly the car has seen little use!
I am sure that any viewer will not be disappointed. MOT until December 2021 (but of course, no longer required by law!), and the car is, of course, tax exempt. A new, bare, unpainted bodyshell is now over £11, 000+VAT, so this represents a fantastic bargain. To build a car the same as this would require something in the region of £25-30k at the very least – so grab a bargain.
Viewing information in the current climate – The car can be viewed whilst observing social distancing rules and guidelines. The car will be carefully cleaned before and after each viewing. The car will be outside to allow for an open-air viewing - fair weather viewing only please.
Please take your time looking through the photos – I am not trying to hide anything from prospective buyers, like the vast majority of people on the net seem to these days. Just check my feedback and you'll see that I'm a completely honest seller. Do remember that there is no substitute for coming to see the car yourself.
