By the early 1970s, VW’s Karmann Ghia had been in production for a good number of years and, although a beautiful car in its own right, was looking decidedly dated, especially when you compared it to Fords runaway success story: the Capri. It was therefore decided that in order to remain competitive in this ever growing market segment, Volkswagen needed to come up with a new swish Coupe, and seeing the remarkable achievement Ford had found by utilising tried and tested underpinnings dressed up in a party frock, it was decided to venture down this route, and so after much research and design, the much loved first generation Scirocco was launched to a much anticipating public in 1974. The car was an instant success and it remained in production until 1981 where its replacement (the MK2) was launched.

The MK2 Scirocco was debuted at the Geneva Motorshow and was met with much admiration and acclaim. Order books quickly filled up as the car was an altogether more practical proposition than its predecessor having much improved front and rear headroom and luggage space, in conjunction with a much improved drag coefficient meaning it was a far more efficient car altogether. Sales were always buoyant with an engine size, trim level, or special edition to suit all tastes and budgets but where the Scirocco really excelled (in polar opposite to some of its rivals) was the way it was put together at Karmann’s Osnabruck factory: build quality and reliability were impeccable in true German Teutonic fashion. The Scirocco soldiered on until 1992 when replaced by VW’s Corrado which was a car that never really cut the Mustard, or gained as many friends, as VW’s Scirocco had meaning today that a good Scirocco is a highly prized machine.

Bradley James Classics are proud to offer you here a very rare opportunity to acquire a 1988 MK2 Scirocco which is a light project. Project Sciroccos do not come on the market very often, tending to be fully finished restored examples. Here the lucky new owner has the golden opportunity to either keep the car standard or to add their own stamp along the way - the choice is entirely yours.

The car has been stored carefully since 2005 and its last MOT back then it passed with no advisories at all. Anyone that knows their 80s VW’s will testify to their mechanical longevity being able to cover intergalactic mileages. Our example here has covered 175, 000 miles showing that it is well run in and had enjoyed regular use up until it was laid up. Please watch our ten minute video on youtube for a full assessment of its body condition: you have to set expectations accordingly so needless to say there are dents, scratches, and small areas of light corrosion to address but for its age and miles its in very sound condition indeed and would make a very easy rolling restoration for the fortunate new owner, but please bear in mind this in indeed a project and will need mechanical refurbishment before she can be started and driven.

Be quick: she's a sure fire highly sought after classic now, never mind in a few years time. We do offer a delivery service whereby we can get this project to you Nationwide at very reasonable costs.
