Amongst the post-war Bentleys, the R-Type is perhaps the easiest to live with. The build quality is all you would expect from this manufacturer, yet it is of manageable proportions and the mechanics are reasonably straightforward to maintain. Driving an R-Type is a delight with ample power from its 4566cc straight six engine, driving through a four speed automatic gearbox, as with this example. Steering and brakes are more than adequate for modern traffic conditions and the suspension offers great comfort with surprisingly good handling.
OGK 53 was delivered new to Col. Sir Frederick Lindsay Coates, one of the Coates-Viyella dynasty, who saw service in the Royal Tank Regiment and later in the Diplomatic Service. The latter involved a posting to Washington 1956-1958 with the British Joint Services Mission. The Bentley went with him and with the Berlin Airlift and Cuba Missile Crisis on the go at the time, one cannot help wondering what conversations took place in this car!
Once Mason’s Black and Shell, the coachwork was resprayed at some time in Sable over Sand. Generally the paintwork is quite good apart from some attention being needed to the bottom edge of the near side rear wing. The interior appears original, the biscuit leather being fair apart from a small tear in the passenger seat. The walnut dashboard is lovely and instrumentation is all present. The tool drawer is in place but tools are absent, however the boot tools appear to be present. The motor car runs and drives very well, the 4. 5 litre engine is smooth and gearbox good. The engine bay is tidy and even has the correct inspection torch in place.
Offered with the car is a V5C registration certificate showing two former keepers and the date of registration shown as 1958 when it returned from America.
Also included is a Bentley handbook and a file of invoices back to the early 1990’s showing servicing and other work carried out to the R-Type. All in all, an inexpensive entry into Bentley motoring.
