During my ownership I have put her back together and was using her regularly until the engine became too Smokey. At this point, it was time to have the engine looked at, and so I pulled the heads off, and had them totally refurbished by the legendary father and son team known as Russ Carpenter racing. Russ and his son Andrew know a thing or two about these engines and I wanted the best.
Having had the heads sorted by Andrew, the bottom end was taken out and refurbished by a local classic car specialist. Once the components were remarried up, she now burbles away and is much better for the environment and lead free of course.
The exterior bodywork was taken back to bare metal and resprayed in 2011 and is still very acceptable today.
Apart from regular washing and waxing, the car was never used in the rain. Plus, I doubt if I have done any more than 3k Miles under my ownership in the last few years. The motor is still not fully run in after the engine rebuild.
The interior is in good condition, with the seats refurbished a few years back and the carpets replaced as well. The dash wood is quite good, and it still has the original dealer stickers next to the glovebox. The roof lining was replaced (wool) and the door cards renewed using oil board. The original door card coverings were reused and show some signs of age in case you are expecting it to look brand new.
Just fitted brand new Pirelli tyres and had the tracking checked. This does have power steering which is as light as a feather to drive, but does take it out on tyres eventually.
The auto box changes as it should with no clunks or noises that should not be there, and she will keep up with modern traffic.
So, the “not so” bad points are - I have not been able to find a missing Bakelite knob for one of the heater controls and have not connected the cable since the engine rebuild. The eight-track mono player works but sounds like a scalded cat sometimes. (I kept it for that authentic touch)
One of the carbs is overfilling with fuel on occasion, ( a light tap on the fuel bowl sorts that out) but will benefit from adjustment eventually.
I would say she is very presentable and ready to drive away or use as is, but if you have the time and inclination, this is the one to have and make into a show winner with little fettling required.
With lockdown, and other reasons I won’t bore you with, I am advertising her now, but having spent many, many hours and a quite a lot of money, I am in no real hurry to see her go. Having said that, I will probably not have the time to enjoy her and would like to know that someone else would.
If you are genuinely interested or would like more information or photos, please contact me to discuss this. I have set the price at around £15500 which is the agreed insurance value, and to be honest - pitched about where it should be with the engine rebuild costs etc.
