This Daimler Dart/ SP250, was manufactured in Coventry in November 1960 and immediately exported to Jobert’s British Motors in Melbourne, Australia. It was produced during the changeover from ‘A’ specification to ‘B’ specification and as such, it contains attributes from both specifications.
It then seems to have spent many of the next 56 years in Western Australia and returned to the UK in mid/ late 2016.
Benefiting from its life in a dryer climate, the chassis is virtually rust free, although the body/ paintwork had suffered and many of the rubber fittings had perished. It has been subject to a recent 4-year restoration where -
The body was original British Racing Green but has been stripped to the gel coat and repainted in Aston Martin, Verde Aqua Caliente. Panel fit is excellent throughout.
All of the body fittings, trim light surrounds, bumpers, etc’, were all re-chromed or replaced with genuine parts where possible.
A new hood frame, green Double Duck hood, tonneau cover and hood bag were fitted.
Fully re-carpeted in Bottle Green. The boot was also fully carpeted, but in black.
Interior fully retrimmed in Tan leather, to match the original factory supplied colour.
The steering was upgraded with a Triumph Rack & Pinion conversion kit from Robert Grinter Restorations. This included a wooden rim Mota-Lita steering wheel.
A Revotec thermostatic electric fan, with a manual override switch was fitted.
A new windscreen glass and rubbers was fitted.
The front suspension was rebuilt, with new shock absorbers, wheel bearings and new rubbers throughout.
Re-furbished rear shock absorbers, new rear wheel bearings and refurbished rear brake callipers.
The original spring clutch was replaced with the Austin Healy 3000 setup, making the clutch pedal much lighter.
A new AutoSparks wiring loom was fitted, along with Electrical Relays to protect the main beam/ flasher headlight, dipped beam headlight, horn and heater fan circuits. LED light bulbs have been fitted to all exterior lights, except the headlights.
The battery and rear tyres are new.
Anything that needed attention has been attended to.
The cockpit has extra switches for electric engine fan override and electric screen washer and a cigar lighter/ USB port, but all of these are hidden from sight, but still easy to access. But the result is that sitting in the cockpit, it looks exactly like it would have done when it left the factory 60 years ago, apart from the Mota-Lita steering wheel.
Reclining brackets have been fitted to both front seats, to tilt the backrest slightly further back. This makes the driving position more comfortable for a driver of average or above hight. The brackets are easy to remove, to revert to a standard setup if required.
A hard top is included with the car. Most exterior of Daimler SP250 hard tops are painted either black, white, or colour matched to the body colour, but uniquely, this one is vinyl covered and the vinyl is in very good condition. The hard top lining and fixing clips are adequate.
A factory workshop manual, parts catalogue and user handbook are included.
