1934 Jowett Dropside Lorry, Outstanding Restoration For Sale

Benjamin and William Jowett founded their Bradford-based company in 1901 with Arthur Lamb. Initially they manufactured bicycles and V-twin engines for driving machinery. The Jowett Motor Manufacturing Company was formed in 1904 and produced their first car in 1906.
Full production began in 1910 and the company's aim was to produce lightweight cars with low prices and low running costs. Engines and gearboxes were made largely of aluminium and both the car's low speed torque and its gear ratios were ideally suited to hilly West Yorkshire roads where climbing ability rather than high speed were the priority. A small number of cars were built before the Great War called a halt to car production. During World War 1 the factory was rededicated to ammunition manufacture. Afterward, the company became Jowett Cars Ltd and car production resumed on a new site at Idle on the outskirts of Bradford.

Jowett built light commercials from 1922 onward with vans, flat and drop-side lorries built on the longer wheelbase car chassis. These were powered by Jowett's purpose built water-cooled flat twin engine. Later vehicles like this magnificent drop-side lorry were powered by a 907cc version of this legendary engine which developed its maximum torque at low rpm. From 1929, the engine received removable cylinder heads for ease of maintenance and the chassis featured four wheel braking.

This 1934 example is ultra-rare and represents a magnificent chassis-up restoration to show condition. Clearly this important historic commercial has had little use since restoration and is of museum quality.
