1971 Volkswagen Type 1 Beetle 1302, restored, show condition For Sale

The VW Beetle was conceived in 1925 by Austro-Hungarian Bela Barenyi, a notorious inventor and father of automobile passive safety. In his attempts to reform society, Adolf Hitler exploited Barenyi's idea and commissioned Ferdinand Porsche to materialize it into prototypes built by Mercedes-Benz. Notably, both Barenyi and Porsche were nominated as Car Engineers of the Century for their work in passive safety and creation of Volkswagen respectively. Once the war was over, the Beetle production was eventually revived through the aid of the Allies and the persistence of British Army Officer Major Ivan Hirst who removed the unexploded bomb from the factory, resurrected the plant and set a baseline production number of 1000 cars per month. Much like a beetle's design, Belaryi's concept was ingenious enough to sustain numerous hardships including wartime, deviant political agendas and fuel crises, reaching an assembly of 21mi units in 65 years in total.
Thirty three years into production, VW introduced version 1302 which benefited from a wider and longer body as well as a longer wheel base than its predecessor. This permitted for a 43% increase in luggage space at the front and a wider track with MacPherson struts at the front suspension, parts of which were later to be shared by Porsche 924. The cabin ventilation system was also upgraded with air flow now directed to the front passengers and exit through boomerang shaped vents by the C-pilars. The Solex caburetted engine was offered in 1300 cc and 1600 cc with twin port cylinder heads and an output of 44 bhp and 51 bhp respectively.
The Beetle 1302 offered was produced on December of 1970 and dispatched to Greece. After surviving 4 decades of fading care, a family friend and collector decided to acquire and restore it to its former glory. The no expense spared task entailed a rotisserie bare metal restoration of the body fitting new floors and new doors. The steering, suspension, brakes and electrics were overhauled along with the engine which was upgraded with 1600 cylinder heads and Solex 34 PICT-3 carburetor. It is now offered both FIA and FIVA certified with only 5000 kms since completion of restoration.
