1980 Land Rover® Series 3 SOLD SOLD

For sale, through JOHN BROWN 4X4 LTD, Land Rover® Series 3 109 Station Wagon in Drab Olive (1980).

6 Cylinder Petrol. MOT until 5th May 2022 with no advisories, but MOT exempt anyway. Tax Exempt. Galvanised Chassis. Replacement Bulkhead. 12 Seater. Full Deluxe Trim. Smoked Window Glass. Free Wheeling Hubs. 750 Tyres with rear spare. Rear Mudflaps. Towball and Electrics. Safari Roof. Original Service Book. Good History file. Fairey Overdrive.

We are delighted to present for sale this rebuilt Series 3 109 Station Wagon, presented in Drab Olive. It is exceptionally rare to find a vehicle such as this fitted with the optional 6 cylinder engine, and coupled with the Galvanised Chassis and Overdrive, this vehicle becomes a very attractive prospect indeed. This vehicle was originally supplied new in Scotland, to the Tayside Fire Service, and the original service book (with stamps) still survives from the original purchase. This is great to see and very unusual – and serves as fantastic provenance for the vehicle too.

Externally, this vehicle has many period features such as the safari roof with alpine lights, rear mudflaps and grab handles and bonnet mounted spare. There is also a further spare fitted to the rear door, to allow long-distance travels without concerns of a puncture ruining the journey ahead. There have been some tasteful upgrades made, such as the 750 tyres on modular style wheels for a strong stance, and the larger defender-style door mirrors for extra visibility to the rear. A towball and electrics is fitted, along with a rear step for easier access. The glass is smoked and reacts to sunlight, darkening when the light hits. There are black lamp surrounds, with black hinges and sills too. The bodywork has, in the past, been subject to a full respray in the drab olive – we were told by the previous keeper this was done before his purchase 10 years ago, when the vehicle was rebuilt. We have elected to leave the exterior as it is as we think it is a handsome truck indeed – mixing vintage cool with modern usability.

The interior is a lovely place to be too – deluxe trim is fitted throughout, with door stays, door cards and door pulls. The dash top is immaculate and is completely free of sun cracks, rare to see at this age. There is a handy middle cubby box for out of sight storage and space for a coffee cup/ drink too – which is much appreciated when you fancy a drive through. The centre row of seats are standard, as they should be, again with door cards to the doors. The seat backs have been covered in order to protect from wear. The pair of twin 3-man benches are also still fitted in the rear, with a load mat to the floor. Even the original headliner is fitted, and as the photo shows, remains in good condition for its age. The vast majority (everything from what we can see!) of the deluxe trim survives, in good order.

Out on the road is where this Series 3 109 really shines – the 6 cylinder engine was an expensive option at the factory, and the unit was the 2. 6 litre variant lifted out of the Rover Cars ‘P3-6’ Series. This engine was rarely fitted due to the level of tax it attracted when purchased in the 1980s. However, it not only affords an addictive engine note, but also more power and torque than the standard engine. It is also smoother and quieter, meaning that you can have a conversation at speed without raising your voice – especially with the sound deadening deluxe trim fitted all around. With the overdrive and larger tyres, this vehicle is capable of holding and maintaining modern driving speeds comfortably, without feeling like you are straining to keep up, or holding up traffic. It is a joy to drive. The previous keeper, as a show of goodwill for our purchase, also put the vehicle through an MOT at his local garage, despite the MOT exemption, which it passed with no advisory items also. The cabin is light and airy in feel, thanks to the glass and space afforded to passengers.

In summary, if you are looking for a rebuilt Series 3 Land Rover® which can carry all the family, then this could be for you. With MOT and Tax Exemption, along with classic insurance, it should prove cheap to run in the long term With the 6 cylinder engine, overdrive and 11 seat arrangement, this is the perfect candidate to carry the family around in vintage style, with far less of the drawbacks associated with earlier models.
