1990 Leyland DAF t244 4x4 camper For Sale

Camper van (well, truck) for sale.

The base vehicle is a Leyland DAF t244, these were the British army’s 4-tonne payload trucks from the early 90’s through to the mid 2010’s. It’s powered by a 5. 9 litre Cummins 6bt, through a 5-speed manual gearbox and a divorced 2-speed transfer box. The transfer box includes a locking centre diff, it’s permanent 4x4.

It’s got power steering, air brakes, and an air assisted clutch so the controls are light. The cab tilts forward for access to the engine.

This one was built in 1990, and was first road registered in December 2016. I bought it in 2018 as a flatbed, and have since converted it to a box body camper.

The truck spec is:
Left hand drive
32, 600km on the clock (around 20k miles) - barely broken in!
Some spots of surface rust here and there underneath, but overall it’s in very good condition for its age. I spent a while looking for a good one, and it has been well looked after in my ownership.
5 new tyres and rims last year (395/ 85r20 Michelin XZL on Aspect 10” rims), this was an upgrade from the original 12r20 wheels.
The original wheels/ tyres can be included if required, but the tyres are 30 years old so while they look in good shape I would not consider them roadworthy (and they’d now be illegal on the front axle due to rule changes last year for tyres >10 years old)
The front wings/ mudguards (classic rust spot in t244s) were a bit corroded, but I fixed them and had them galvanised so they won’t give any more trouble. Various other bits (including the box body mount brackets) were galvanised at the same time.

MOT till 28th Feb 2022. It’s gone through every MOT in my ownership with no advisories. It had new filters all round toward the end of last year, and it’s only done a few hundred km since.

There’s a few spares that will go with it - air/ oil filters, lift pump, boost diaphragm, plus some other bits I’ve probably forgotten. Also a hub nut tool (these are no longer available from DAF so very handy to have).

MGVW is 10800kg - so in the UK it requires a ‘C’ type HGV licence. At the last MOT it weighed 6438kg on the brake testers. While I made every effort to keep the weight down, this is lighter than I expected, so I’m not 100% convinced the scales were accurate. I will take it to the nearest weighbridge to confirm when I get a chance.

It is registered as a private HGV, with body type ‘box van’.
Road tax is £200 per year, insurance for me was £143 this year. It returns around 14mpg.

Other than a couple of USB ports, the cab is standard/ unmodified. It’s in no way luxurious - bear in mind this is a 30 year old ex army truck! It has the factory fitted sunroof (actually a machine gun hatch, but it’s ace as a sunroof on hot days!) The cab has the driver’s seat and two passenger seats. It’s a sleeper cab so there is space behind the seats for storage.

The camper body spec is:
Insulated box body, spring mounted to allow chassis flex without overstressing the box.

The box was originally a refrigerated unit, so it’s well insulated. The box was built in 2014, save for the back end and the wheel wells which I made to suit this truck.

24v electrical system in the box
2-off solar panels on roof, giving 530W in total through an MPPT charger
2-off 115Ah deep cycle lead acid leisure batteries
2-way split charge relay - the alternator will charge the camper batteries while driving once the truck batteries are full, the solar panels will charge the truck batteries once the camper batteries are full. This keeps all four batteries on charge year-round, which is handy.
52 litre top loading compressor fridge/ freezer
8kW diesel-air heater (toasty and warm in subzero temps last winter)
USB charge ports
Variable voltage DC charger (for laptops etc)
2-ring gas hob & sink
External 20l gas tank, refillable from regular LPG pumps at a petrol station. Lots of adaptors included to allow LPG tank filling in countries which use different LPG pump fittings.
LED lighting, switchable from next to the door or the bed (so you don’t need to get out of bed to switch the lights on/ off :D )
Shower area
External fresh water tank (85 litre)
High level king size fixed bed at rear
Area under the bed is currently set up to store bikes/ paragliders/ portable toilet. There is a lot of space in this area, you could easily fit another bed in there if a third berth were required.

Overall vehicle dimensions are 7. 5m long x 3. 5m tall x 2. 5m wide. The internal box dimensions are 5. 17m long x 2. 27m wide x 2. 12m tall. I’m 6’3 and there are a good few inches of clearance when standing in the back.

The water system is currently only cold water - there is no boiler. There are spare gas connections under the sink if you wanted to fit a gas on-demand boiler for hot water. The tap/ shower head is a mixer so it’s ready to take a hot water supply.

There’s no electrical hookup. This probably goes without saying, but it wasn’t built to go to campsites!

It’s not the shiniest camper around, nor is it the fanciest - but it’s simple, rugged, field serviceable, and will take you just about anywhere you could feasibly want to take a camper!

I built it for a ‘big trip’ we intended to do last year, which then didn’t happen due to Covid-19 (like so many things…)
For various reasons it’s going to be several years before we have the time to do something like that again, so I’m putting it up for sale rather than having it lying around for a few years - which wouldn’t do it any good.

Thanks for looking :)
