1981 Stunning MGB Roadster For Sale
This car is no exception, and I feel you’ll struggle to find a better one in this price range. It’s had a great deal of work during its life, which I will detail throughout the ad. The car has an MOT until May 2022 and of course, with the new DVLA rules, the car will be both tax and MOT exempt in April 2022, as it was registered after April 1981, which really does qualify it as one of the last ever made.
The colour, Night fire red, is actually a Rover colour, and the previous owner when he had the car restored/ resprayed, decided to change the colour from a pale blue to the stunning Night fire red , which, in my opinion, really does suit the car and sets it apart from the rest. The previous owner even contacted the DVLA and updated the V5 so that the colour is recorded as red.
The car had a major restoration in the late 1990s/ early 2000’s which consisted of most, if not all new body panels ( both outer and inner), and structural and mechanical rebuilds, which all in all totalled in excess of £17, 000
I have a great deal of history and receipts for the car which links to the £17, 000 figure and it goes back to the mid 1990’s and beyond detailing much of this, and she has also had a reconditioned/ replacement engine recently, alongside a new clutch. The Speedo now reads 145, 000, but that is the original engine, so by having the replacement fitted, one can deduce that she has done very little mileage on this replacement/ reconditioned engine. However, this mileage will rise slightly, as I do use her.
Structurally, she appears to be nice and solid. The sills, castle rails, chassis legs and spring hangers all appear to be fine, and she has been professionally under sealed with a high quality wax based product (not your usual stuff from an aerosol can that you can do yourself on the back yard) in the past, and anyone is welcome to come and have a good look around.
Of course, as she hasn’t been fully painted since the mid 1990s/ 2000’s there are a few very minor imperfections but as you can see in the pictures, she presents herself very well indeed. There’s nothing that needs desperately sorting out – and I’d much rather be buying a car that hadn’t just been painted – you’ve no idea what’s lurking beneath!
The wing-top seams are all in good order, the front and rear wings, along with door bottoms etc, remain really nice. Like I’ve said, she’s not a concourse car but she’s not the usual tarted-up junk either. She sits on a set of mini-lite wheels, which are virtually unmarked, and these set her off really well. To add to this, her hood is in excellent condition, and I actually think it has been barely used.
She starts, runs and drives very nicely indeed. The fuel system has been professionally cleaned, the carbs have been cleaned and rebalanced and she ticks over smoothly, and pulls strongly. There are no overheating issues and the oil pressure is excellent. The overdrive is fully functional, having just had a new switch installed and it makes cruising a pleasure.
She pulls up in a straight line, rides lovely (for an MGB!), and she has a beautiful raspy sound that comes from her exhaust, and there aren’t too many rattles. She really is a pleasure to travel in!
The interior is very clean and tidy. She has been fitted with a brand new mota-lita 15 inch steering wheel, and she has an upgraded 4 speaker Pioneer stereo complete with cd fitted. The dash is in very good condition, and the previous owner had black ruched leather seats fitted, which really set her off, and they have just the right amount of patina. I have also been informed that most of her life, she was garaged, and the previous owner had her for 25 years. Furthermore, for some years, she was owned by someone in Malta ( where it never rains), however, I don’t know how long she resided there for.
I’ve put her up at £9350ono, which is below average price for an MGB Roadster in this condition, and I feel that this is an excellent price for a fantastic car which has received an immense amount of time, care, money and attention over its life and which attracts a great deal of attention wherever it goes. Obviously it’s not a concourse show car but it’s generally very, very good indeed ( just accompany me and listen to the comments she receives), but she is ready to use and enjoy. You’ll be able to see that for yourself when you come to view.
Please take your time looking through the photos – I am not trying to hide anything from prospective buyers, and if you come to view, you’ll see that I’m a completely honest man, and don’t forget, it’s always better to come and view a car, as there is no substitute for coming to see the car yourself.
I strongly recommend viewing the car if you plan to buy. I've described her as well as I can. She is sold as seen with no warranty because of her age, and all funds must be cleared before she can be taken away. Thanks, JP
