The Ferrari 330 GT 2+2 made its debut at the Brussels Salon in January 1964, proceeding its earlier 250 2+2 GTE and 330 America cousins. The Series I, as it later became known, was much more than a re-engined 250, it was a bolder, more distinctive incarnation in both looks and performance.
Pininfarina was once again entrusted with the styling, and their vision of Ferrari's evolution drew muse from the cars' predecessors yet included some daring design elements. A sharper nose and tail, a wide grille, and the espousal of a characteristic quad headlight arrangement, all of which reflected the tastes of Ferrari's most important export market, the USA.
Although some criticised its styling, the Series I four-headlight 330 GT has become truly evocative of 1960s fashion, lauded both for its individuality and Pininfarina's purity of design. The fantastic Gioacchino Colombo designed, high-output, V-12 engine was fitted to all 300 GT series and produced an impressive 300bhp, adorned with triple Weber carburettors, this combination taking the vehicle from 0-100km in an astounding 6. 3 seconds, making it the fastest road-going Ferrari at the time.
Series II cars from 1966 onwards reverted to a more conventional twin-headlight arrangement ditching the slightly awkward quad-headlights and aesthetically looked much better for it.
This particular Series II has lived somewhat of a globe-trotting life throughout its history. Initially delivered to Italy, the car later made its way to the United States of America during the late 1970s, with records of it being for sale in Virginia, US during 1979.
Subsequently, it travelled from state-to-state and underwent a full bare-metal repaint in Metallic Bronze (Nocciola Metallizzato) prior to winning numerous awards at prestigious Concours events in Pennsylvania, including ‘Ferrari of Execptional Merit’ at the 1988 Ferrari Festival, First in Class at a combined marques Concours, and several top-three finishes at various other events. Following this star-studded life in PA, the car then ended up in Mexico, before coming to Germany via Florida - where it was again restored with a colour change to Nero - and then going back across the world to Arizona, then down to Chile before being imported into and sold in the UK during 2015 to our vendor and current owner.
A fantastic matching-numbers example, this 330 GT 2+2 has been significantly overhauled by marque specialist GTO Engineering, with the vendor commissioning a general mechanical ‘tidy up’ along with the fitment of a reconditioned steering box, new track rod ends, new clutch slave and master cylinders, a new exhaust and various other sundry items, with a total cost of £22, 500.
Along with the aforementioned work taking place at GTO, the car was also inspected and awarded Ferrari Classiche Certification at the same time.
In recent years, the gearbox has been rebuilt by marque specialist QV London serving known weakness to synchromesh in 2020. The fuse box has been reconditioned following a non-charging issue, and the battery has been upgraded to a new deep-cycle AGM item, furthermore the radiator has been given a new core in 2017 and the interior has also been significantly overhauled and restored, with the leather seats and door cards being re-trimmed during 2016 by specialist Trimania.
Offered with the fitting cherished registration of ’33 OF’ and with full Ferrari Classiche Certification, this 1966 left-hand-drive 330 GT 2+2 is in stunning condition throughout, and remains the envy of many drivers and enthusiasts to this day, just as it would have been in period.
