In Alfa Romeo's Spider, Battista Pininfarina infused his 36 years of design evolution and sophistication. The simplicity of the Spider's biconvex streamlined body established his principle of less being more, a doctrine often unattained by today’s industry. Disciplined to form following function, the Spider was shaped to dress a well proven race-bred technology felt in the heel and toe pedals, 5 speed gearbox, high revving twin cam engine and disc brakes. The overall result was in accordance with Alfa Romeo’s racing pedigree and long tradition as manufacturer of sporty barchettas.
The Spider was unveiled as 1600 at the 1966 Geneva Motor Show where it was nicknamed Duetto. It remained in production for 2 years before the beginning of a series of engine and body modifications made to satisfy the automotive trends of the following 3 decades it remained in production.
The Spider 1600 Duetto offered was produced in 1967 for the North American market and dispatched to its first owner in Canada. After 21 years, an airline pilot fell in love at first sight and acquired it to have it flown across the Atlantic to reach his storage house by the Athenian riviera in Greece. Used only on occasion over the years, this Duetto now presents in an unrestored state with a memory-rich patina as specified by Battista-penned top-down Alfa Romeo motoring.
