1972 Heritage Shell rebuild to concours, show winning standards For Sale

I have decided it’s time to give up this wonderful car. It’s a 1972 ( 1974 registered) MGB.
Everything, absolutely everything has been renewed or restored.
Here’s the list of work completed, from top to bottom, front to back.
The car has a Heritage Shell (they are now about £12000 unpainted, so with paint it’ll be more than £16000). It was painted by the respected car painter and restorer Mr C. Grant, Tayside Autos, he corrected blemishes in the basic shell (they all have them folks), achieved some of the best shut lines I’ve ever seen, check out the curves around the top sides of the grill, he primed and painted the whole car, including underside where some others just use a coat of under seal. So, Red all over. Then it was waxoiled.
Why pay extra for a heritage shell ? Not original, some might say, well, are you absolutely sure your intended purchase is original ? An “original” car might have a new floor, sills, boot floor, wings, doors, boot lid, paint, slapped on underseal, new jacking points, poor shut lines, non-matching numbers, egg cartons in the sills, Heinz tins filling holes, filler and fibreglass and the list continues….
I tried to keep the car raw and standard, so no leather seats or wooden dashes. As a person in the Classic trade said to me recently “ these classics were once old cars that may just have avoided the scrapyard, they were not cherished, they were not trophy queens then, just old BL cars which often spent the first few years of life unsold, in a field of long grass, not wanted and with just a dusting of poorly applied paint and no underseal. His comments really made me think, I did actually see the fields of cars near me as a boy.
It has an extensive history file back to 1973 and receipts for parts and work filling a lever arch file. The file even has a 1976 professional assessment carried out by the second owner to establish condition prior to purchase.
It has new wool carpets, hood, tonneau and half tonneau from Prestige, engine was rebored and rebuilt, gearbox overdrive refurbished by Chas Butler, Forfar, a marque specialist described the gear change as the best he’s ever experienced, new Aldon distributor, new SU carbs, alternator, radiator, brake and clutch masters, pipes and slaves. New wiring harness, petrol tank, (which I powdered coated along with every part restored (including heater box and hood frame, radiator shroud) dash and console, the screen surround was restored by a specialist. Rostyles are perfect and new tyres fitted to them last year, no miles but this year but I replaced the rostyles (just to protect them) with wider new tyres and black alloys from MGB Hive, along with parabolic rear springs from MGOC , GAZ shocks front and rear and whilst I was doing the work, I replaced, steering rack, wishbones, front springs and pans and fitted poly bushes just because…. I also fitted a new Moss Tourist Trophy stainless exhaust, so it drives like a new car and sounds amazing. I initially want the running gear standard BL/ MG stuff but these upgrades are really worth the expense and trouble. The new exhaust is worth having too. Think this year’s work cost £2500. The Rostyles and their new tyres come with the sale for originality and the car has a tailored specialised breathable car cover also included. As you’ve probably worked out the car is very well looked after and wants for nothing.
As a bit of fun I counted up the receipts for the parts spend, not including new shell and paint, and it’s over £14000. See photos of receipt folder and also the 1976 report mentioned above. Nice to have that bit of history.
Only entered one competition and won. If you doubt the validity of excellent MGB prices check out the recent HandH auction for MGBs (£22500, this one is way better )and also Morris Leslie’s last auction (£16600, I viewed, it was a fair car but no more than condition 3 ). I can confirm my car far exceeds the norm and is comparable with a similar example presently on sale at Border Reivers of Glasgow.
Morris Leslie staff viewed the car last summer and said the price ‘could hit the top’ ( I may ask them to sell in the future as good prices are being achieved for MGBs at the moment but thought to try a classified advert so buyer and seller can avoid commission and a bidding war ) and mentioned it could cost £50k to ask a local top restorer to build from scratch, who knows, but I suspect you couldn’t build this yourself with the work completed for less than asking price and honestly it’s a tough old job. Those who watch will have seen the prices for heritage shelled models rise. The true mileage is unknown but I point out with the engine and gearbox refurb and all the other replacements it’s not as important as it may once have been.
It has a period Motorola radio in dash but main music is by a player in the glove box and cd changer in rear.
Visit, view, drive and then buy possibly one of the best MGs presently on sale.
Oh, a new Malpassi filter king fitted today and it looks very good next to the heater box, there’s always something to do and you’ll have the winter to get this car looking as you wish and, if that’s leather seats and a wooden dash…… seriously, check every live MGB advert you can find on c and c, eBay, autotrader and anywhere you can think of and see how many have an engine bay as nice as this one, actually see how many £25-30k examples have the confidence to even show you pictures of the engine bay, then read the spec and I would respectfully suggest that no professional restorers can afford to carry out a full restore for this money. This car was only used on dry days since restoration and even then only for a few miles to keep everything moving well.
So, come and view, have a coffee and a chat. I’ve never agreed with people who say “no time-wasters please”. No one wastes my time, it’s a big spend so you deserve to look and look again, maybe even get a professional appraisal, decide if it’s right for you before committing, most of us work too hard to waste money. It will be a difficult car to then walk away from but if you do, you’ll leave with a COVID virtual handshake and my sincere best wishes.
I’m not a dealer and so can’t take trade-ins or provide finance, I’m just an ordinary old bloke trying to reduce his collection of vehicles. Please check out my other vehicles on C+C, they are an indication of how I enjoy looking after them and not necessarily feeling a great urge to drive.
