1972 L Reliant Rebel 700 van For Sale

1972 L Reliant Rebel 700 van, 64000 miles with very low owners. I bought this in a real survivor state and I believe it had been in regular use until fairly recently. The rare sliding windows had been fitted originally (included), and the rear folding seat is also present. The V5 says estate but it comes up as a commercial on my insurance, but as I wanted a van the rear panels were fitted and double skinned for insulation and sound deadening reasons (looks prettier too!)
Lots of originality was present inside and out, but it was definitely time for a bit of a refresh! The original white paint was falling off and there was some minor damage to the grille slats and n/ s wing, those areas were repaired and the body was stripped to the bare gel coat inside and out. Then the body was treated to a coat of epoxy primer followed by 2k top coat in the original shade of white. One of the door frames had failed on a braised joint so another NOS item was sourced rather than repairing the original one. The door seals were replaced, some new bonnet hinges and NOS Desmo Boomerang wing mirrors were sourced and the MG wheels were replaced with some 12” Revolution wheels with new tyres. The lights are all new with some Wipac Crystal headlights. All the brightwork is original and in good condition, so it was left like that! Underneath; the chassis had rust prevention from new and that’s resulted in the best original chassis of this age I’ve seen, a few fresh coats of Rustoleum and it’s good for another 50 years! I went though the brakes and suspension and it needed very little to get it to MOT standard and it drives very very well!
There’s a new stainless fuel tank as the original hadn’t survived quite as well as the chassis. All fuel lines have been replaced with E10 resistant hose.
The interior has been re carpeted, it also has a new headlining, rubber floor matting, front seat diaphragms and seat belts.
The engine is an 850 unit from a circa 1988 Rialto as the original 700 had been replaced with a very tired 750. The 850 was bought as a good used engine which is exactly what it has turned out to be with no smoking, good compression and a healthy amount of power. I replaced all the gaskets other than the head gaskets, and also cleaned/ painted the engine before fitting.
The original exhaust was reused with a new silencer.
The electrics were checked and repaired as per the original wiring diagram, with a new battery and alternator fitted, every electrical item works correctly. This is a unique opportunity to buy a Rebel van in this condition, it’s perfect for advertising/ marketing any business, or just a bit of fun on the weekend.
This was a personal project; however my business specialises in Reliant and other sports car restoration and all the work has been carried out professionally in our workshop.
