THE BACKGROUND

The 60s and 70s were the decades when the Italian Carrozzeria (coachbuilders) were at the height of their powers. One of these renowned builders was Automobili Stabilimenti Carrozzerie Moretti, otherwise known simply as Moretti. They took Fiats and rebuilt them into truly special and desirable vehicles. This car is a fine example of that.

Moretti took the humble Fiat 125 and gave it a gorgeous Coupé body, handcrafted interior and some tasteful options to create what we believe to be one of the best looking cars to wear the Fiat badge.

The GS16 was only built for 4 years, from 1967 to 1971, and only 52 of these models were made, so this really is a remarkable survivor.
THE HISTORY

Very few GS16s survive, and even fewer with the history this vehicle has. It was delivered new to Johannesburg by Alconi Developments and first registered by its new owner in 1972.

In 1977 the windscreen broke, so the car was taken off the road. Over the next few years, the owner tried on several occasions to obtain a new windscreen, but was unable to get the correct item. As such, the car was only on the road and being used for about 5 years – which explains the unusually good condition of the bodywork and chassis in this 50 year old car.

The car is now in the Netherlands and in need of restoration, but is a running, solid example of an exceptionally rare model.

This wonderful vehicle comes with:

?Part service history
?Around 30 receipts, including the original sales receipt and registration document
?A very low, genuine mileage of 16, 830 miles
?Extremely rare right-hand drive model

THE PAPERWORK

As well as the original sales receipt and registration, a large number of other receipts and documents come with the vehicle, providing solid provenance.

THE INTERIOR

Often in vehicles of this age, especially ones in need of restoration, the interior is poorly kept. Not so with this vehicle. The sumptuous seats, door cards and headlining are in great condition, and all of the original internal trim pieces appear to be intact and present. For a vehicle entering its sixth decade, it’s survived tremendously well.

One of the highlights of the interior has to be the lovely wood-trimmed dash, with the unique, wooden 3-spoke Hellebore steering wheel. It’s a gorgeous, tactile item that wears its patina well.

Naturally, there are elements of the interior that would benefit from restoration – this is, after all, a 50 year old vehicle. But you will struggle to find another restoration project from this era of Italian manufacture with such a complete interior, and in such good condition.

THE EXTERIOR

Externally, Moretti really made the 125S a thing of beauty. The swooping front wings and perfect proportions combine to give this little coupé an elegant, timeless look. It’s a truly great design.

While Fiats from this era generally don’t age well, this particular car’s bodywork appears to be in very good condition. Everything seems solid and straight, even the undercarriage and mechanicals look like they’re from a much younger car. Of course, there are some scuffs, minor dents and general age-related wear, but we are certainly impressed with how well the car presents.

The major items that need to be addressed externally are the missing windscreen and the paintwork. As some of the paintwork is scuffed and cracked, especially on the bonnet, it would be beneficial to replay the car and return it to its original light metallic blue.

Also original are the cars wheels – the rare, optional Ruspa 5. 5x13 rims. These were an expensive option on the Moretti 124 and 125. They’re a unique design and, once restored, really will make for an eye-catching feature.

THE MECHANICS

Wisely, Moretti used the classic Fiat twin cam “Lampredi” engine to power the GS16. This naturally-aspirated, inline 4-cylinder, 1. 6 unit features twin overhead cams, 8 valves and drives the rear wheels through a 5 speed manual box. The original rating for the unit was 99bhp at 6, 400rpm, enough to push this sub-tonne coupé to a claimed top speed of 118mph.

The owner tells us that the engine starts well and easily, but is still in need of some maintenance. It has recently had a new timing belt, oil filter, fuel pump, water hoses and thermostat housing. The last recorded service was undertaken in 2005.

We are also told that the gearbox shifts well and runs quietly, but that the brakes would benefit from renovation.

THE APPEAL

With Moretti no longer in business, and these vehicles becoming less common by the day, this really is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to obtain one of the rarest cars from Italy’s Carrozzerie heyday.

It’s an achingly pretty thing, with wonderful proportions and the carefree, swooping profile of a true classic Italian sports car. Once restored, this little gem will be a real heart-stopper. From the gorgeous original interior to the optional Ruspa wheels, there’s much to admire about the GS16.

As a car in need of a full restoration, it’s not a project for the faint-hearted, but it’s definitely one that is more than worth undertaking. There were only 52 Moretti 125S GS16s made, to find one in such original condition, and in right-hand drive no less, just doesn’t happen. If ever a car deserved to be given another chance, this is it. Too many of these lovely cars have fallen by the wayside. Here’s an opportunity to not only purchase one of the prettiest cars to come out of Italy during its greatest period for car manufacture, but to be the proud owner of one of the rarest cars on the planet.

We can just imagine it now - a beautiful sunny day, that sonorous twincam singing as you cruise down your favourite country lane, clicking through the ratios of that classic 5 speed manual. As an antidote to the modern era’s obsession with ever more complex, heavy and (let’s be honest) ugly cars, they don’t come much better than this.

The Moretti has a South African title and is imported to the EU. You do not need to pay any import taxes in the EU. We can help with transport. Trading in, buying and consignment possible.
