Description:

The Series IIA is considered by many the hardiest Series model constructed, having the same main design as the original Series 1, but improved upon in many areas. It is the type of classic Land Rover that features strongly in the general public's perception of the Land Rover, and the same basic shape was carried right through to the most recent Defender, which only last year ceased production after its long 67 year life span.

This particular model is an excellent example of the archetypal Marine Blue short wheel base (88”) ‘Hard Top’ model from the early 60s. Comprehensively rebuilt by the enthusiastic previous owner, the vehicle features desirable upgrades such as a galvanised chassis, smooth-riding parabolic springs and an ex-MoD 2. 5l diesel engine for additional ‘go’.

The said engine (reconditioned in 1993, then stored in reserve) starts readily from cold settling into good tick over with minimal smoke, and drives very well indeed cruising happily with modern traffic at roughly 50-55mph thanks to taller ratio differentials. The brakes pull the vehicle up to a stop nice and straight, the parabolic springs give an exceptionally comfortable ride for a Series Land Rover, and the steering is good with no untoward wandering. All gears select perfectly and the low range and four-wheel drive options all work as they should.

Underneath, the new Richards galvanised chassis means that structural corrosion is a thing of the past if looked after and will give decades of good service – far more than an original item. The chassis number has been etched in the correct location, and there also appears to be a waxy coating inside and out helping to protect it further. The bulkhead is believed to be original, but has been restored to a good standard. The body work is described as very good, with fresh Marine Blue paintwork to a reasonable standard, and the galvanised body cappings/ bumper have been freshened up with a dull silver finish – obviously this means the vehicle isn’t by any means concours show quality, but stands well and makes for a very usable vehicle.

The interior is good; with three new black vinyl seats up front, along with new floor mats front and rear. The original ‘Elephant Hide’ rear bench seats and driver’s side door card show signs of age with the odd few rips/ tears, but this adds to the character…! The cabin (and underside of the bonnet) has been fitted out with a light grey vinyl-clad sound proofing material, which does seem to do the job as it is pretty quiet for a diesel Series Landy! What there is in the way of instrumentation/ electricals all work fine, including the period correct individual wiper motors. The vehicle has just had a fresh MoT for peace of mind, valid until 14th November 2022. The odometer reads 99, 363, however we are unable to verify whether this is correct. Note: the speedometer ‘under reads’ by ~8mph due to the different diff. ratios – please bear this in mind for speed limits.

This great looking old truck would make a fantastic investment that can also be used and enjoyed all year round for a multitude of uses, thanks to the versatility of a classic Land Rover… not many other classic cars offer the ability to go to the pub on a summers evening as well as getting around in the depths of winter snow. If you require other options fitting to the vehicle i. e. canvas top, different wheels and tyres or any other changes, these are things we can carry out for you, just get in touch to discuss your needs.

In every respect this is regarded as a defender but in 1984 there were no Defenders only 90's 110's and 127's I've owned this car for about 14+ years and even now when I get behind the wheel it makes me smile. When I originally bought the car it had a normally aspirated 2. 5 diesel, it had been run on veg oil or bio ...
