X-50 Performance Pack upgrade, 6 speed manual, Air Conditioning, high back sports seats electrically adjustable and heated (F), cruise control, electric windows, electrically adjusted heated door mirrors, leather and maple steering wheel, BOSE sound system, aluminium/ maple gear selector with Turbo embossed motif, aluminium/ maple handbrake lever with Porsche embossed motif, polished aluminium entry sills, tilt/ slide electric sunroof, C. D/ AM/ FM radio, PCM with Sat Nav/ telephone module, heated rear screen, white faced instrument dials, extended Burr Maple pack, exclusive leather interior, park assist, chrome twin exhaust tips, Litronic headlights with power wash, onboard computer, PSM, 18” Turbo 2 hollow spoke alloys, top tinted windscreen, rain sensing wipers.

Finished in the desirable shade of Lapis Blue, factory code M5W. All panels appear to line up well with correct gaps all round. We could find no corrosion, only very minor gravel rash, the odd stone chip, commensurate with age and mileage covered, but overall, far above the standard expected and a reflection of diligent long-term ownership.

A striking highlight of this particular 996 Turbo, special order Magnolia leather with extended Burr Maple detail. The Alcantara headlining, carpets, door trim and sun visors are Metropole Blue and strike a pleasing contrast to the lighter shades of the leather seats, steering wheel, door cards and gear lever gaiter. Five white faced instrument dials with aluminium surrounds, sit centrally in a binnacle behind the leather and maple steering wheel, which can be adjusted. The electric front seats remain in good order with only minimal patina, while the rear seats have seen very little use. Carpets have been protected by Porsche over mats.

The 18” Turbo hollow spoke alloys present immaculately with no kerb marks or scuffs to note. Tyres are a matching set of Pirelli P Zero Rosso’s, all of which show plenty of tread.

Debuted at the Frankfurt Motor Show in September 1999, and powered by a twin-turbocharged and intercooled, 3600 cc, dry sump, flat six-cylinder engine, which was basically derived from the 1998 Le Mans winning 911 GT1 race car. Developing, in standard guise, a very creditable 414 bhp @ 6000 rpm and 415 lb ft / 563 Nm of torque. However, our example further benefits from having the factory fitted X50 Package, introduced in 2002. This included larger K24 turbochargers and intercoolers, a revised ECU and quad tail pipe exhausts, increasing power output to a staggering 444bhp. The resulting performance figures of 0-60 mph in sub 4. 0 secs and a top speed of around 192 mph are equally impressive. The power is transferred via a six speed manual Getrag transmission to all four wheels, ensuring grip and confidence.

This attractive model starts willingly, with no evidence of smoke and idles steadily. During our extended test drive the 996 Turbo performed well in all departments. Considered by many to currently be the “undervalued” Porsche, with 444bhp on tap, manual 6 speed, plus AWD, it would be hard to disagree.
