The Porsche 968 has a great combination of speed, practicality and small production numbers, and as a result has established a unique position in the world of classic Porsche enthusiasts. Clean, low mileage examples have become both rare and expensive, and prices at auction have been going through the roof. It is essentially the successor to the 944, with a classic GT layout of front engine and rear wheel drive, and almost perfect weight distribution, and it is a real head-turner, with a classic body shape incorporating a low nose line and wide wheel arches.
The engine is a sophisticated version of the 3-litre, four-cylinder, 16-valve unit first introduced on the Porsche 944 S2 - it is all-alloy, with VarioCam for maximum power throughout its speed range. It generates 240 bhp at 6200 rpm, and at the time of its production had the highest per-cylinder displacement of any car engine, and the highest torque output of any unblown 3-litre. Porsche spent a lot of time and money in the development of this engine, and it definitely shows.
The car also has all-round independent suspension, using McPherson struts at the front end and semi-trailing aluminium arms at the rear with torsion-bar springs and separate dampers. This, in combination with its perfectly-balanced weight distribution, leads to magnificent handling.
This 1993 'K'-registration Cabriolet is a nice original car, finished in Slate Grey metallic (showing some minor age-related marks), with grey leather Sports interior and 4-speed Tiptronic automatic transmission (its drive doughnut was replaced last year, using genuine factory parts). It runs and drives extremely well - mileage is 132,240 - and has full service history with many receipts. With classic Porsche prices going through the roof, this represents a good opportunity to get into a rare classic Porsche at a relatively affordable price. It will be supplied with a year's MOT and a full service.
