Now becoming highly sought after, this "last of the line" Mercedes W201 190LE (denoting Limited Edition) was supplied by Carol's Mercedes, Wolverhampton, and is still carrying all its original supplying dealer regalia, right down to the "Car Care" kit that was supplied with the car when new. I've seen more W201 190E's than most, and I firmly believe this is one of the best examples of it's type, and one that even still retains that new look, feel and smell, attributes most vehicles of this age have lost many, many years ago.
It's had just two previous owners, the first who bought the vehicle new on 1st July 1993, and kept it over 22 years until July 2015, when it was bought by an enthusiast. It's crystal clear, from the pristine condition of the car, and more especially the un-faded nature of the orange dial needles, that it has been regularly garaged. This is also a highly cosseted vehicle, and even though it's only covered a mere 51,970 miles, there are no less than 25 entries in the service book, the vast majority of them from Mercedes Main Dealers, or Mercedes Specialists.
Naturally, it goes without saying that the vehicle comes with a full host of original keys, a full book pack, an un-opened First Aid kit, and even full tool roll which too remains unopened. Also, just to add that everything that comes with this car is in the same immaculate condition, and further echoes the way this car has been taken care off. It also comes with the all important 190 Limited Edition A5 size Certificate, indicating this is 190LE No.468.
So, in summary, one of the best W201's you'll find, and it's an even bigger bonus that it's a last of the line Limited Edition variant of the W201.
THE 190E 1.8 vs 190E 2.0 DEBATE
This is something I'm asked again and again, mostly from concerned potential buyers who have read that the 190E 1.8 is somewhat under powered. Well, I can tell you having owned and driven more W201's than most, that in normal day to day driving, you won't notice the difference 99% of the time. There's also lots of mis-information and misunderstanding of the different variants of the M102 engine fitted to the W201. The only 190E 2.0 that actually had 122 bhp was the M102.962 versions, without catalysts, and a slightly less complex versions of the KE-Jetronic system made between around '88-'92. As soon as the catalyst was fitted, the power output of the 2.0 Litre decreased to 118bhp. Conversely, the M102 1.8 is rated at 113bhp, just 5bhp less!.
To test my theory, I once had a potential customer who was convinced the 190E 1.8 would be underpowered. When he visited me, I let him test drive two 190E's, a 1.8 and a 2.0, back to back, without telling him which was which. After a ten mile test drive in each car, he actually thought the 1.8 was the 2.0 and vice-versa, which proves my point exactly.
Also, now, some 20 plus years on, its all a bit academic, as it comes down to how a particular car has been treated during its life. I've had quite a few very well looked after 1.8's that, because of the way they've been maintained, would leave an average 2.0 for dead.
Finally, an interesting piece of information arises from all this; it's been suggested by some that Mercedes, in their wisdom were somewhat conservative when quoting performance figures for their cars during this era, so as not to be embarrassed in the future. It's not unusual to hear from owners who've had their cars rolling road tested, to find that they're still producing very near the original quoted outputs, which is testament to this, and also to the standard of engineering these cars were built to.
At the end of the day though, where can you go fast these days, and if you do want a fast car, why buy a W201?. That's not the point of these cars; it's all about the incredible standard of engineering and that feeling you get behind the wheel of what I think is the best Mercedes car of the last 30 years.
THE MTSV DIFFERENCE
Unlike some, I don’t just simply go out, buy any old car, give it a good clean, then advertise it for more than the purchase price, disregarding any issues the car may have in the hope the new buyer won’t notice…I just couldn’t do that. The cars I source are carefully selected, and I work very hard to ensure that when these cars leave me, I have the satisfaction of knowing they are as good as they possibly can be within the constraints I have. As such, in my 11th year of doing this, I have many repeat customers and a steady stream new customers coming along that have been recommended via word of mouth…this is the ultimate accolade for anyone in business.
Any other questions, please feel free to contact me at [email protected] or on 07976 280738. I'm a firstly and foremostly a true Mercedes enthusiast of many, many years, and a Mercedes Club Member, so it's a pleasure to meet and speak to like-minded people.
Finally, I'm situated in Keighley (pronounced keith-ley), West Yorkshire (Postal Code Area BD21) which is approximately 11 miles from Skipton, and 20 miles West of Leeds.
