One of the first 1965 Porsche 912’s in Champagne Yellow 6405 with Black Leatherette Interior. Production date 16/07/1965 912 Karmann Coupe, according to the certificate of authenticity this is an all matching numbers car.
The first 912's had painted dashboards the same colour as the exterior of car, thus creating what is now referred to as a “painted dash” 912. (In actuality, the dashboards of all early 9-series Porsches were painted the same colour as the exterior, but as a cost cutting measure, the first 912s were then not given the additional layer of anti-glare matte black paint and strip of teak wood trim that came standard on the 911.) The first 912’s also had the 4 screw hole horn grilles.
Has almost all of its original features such as: squared off lower dash pad, unusual horn air cleaners, painted dash, Solex Carburators, steel wheels, steering wheel (missing horn pad), and 1965 paint code. There are some paint bubbles in various spots but body is very solid and ready for a great restoration. The engine starts. This is a great opportunity to own a very rare classic Porsche.
The chrome work on the car is superb with everything attached, opening front ¼ light windows. The interior is all complete and also in very good condition. The car is authentic with a black interior and matching numbers engine.
The History: Concerned that the considerable price increase of a Type 911 with "flat" six-cylinder power plant over the Type 356 would cost the company sales and narrow brand appeal, in 1963 Porsche executives decided to introduce a new four-cylinder entry-level model. Like the 911 (original internal factory designation "901"), the four-cylinder 912 was originally known at Zuffenhausen by a number with a zero in the middle, but the "902" designation was never used publicly. ("912" as project number was used after 1968 to indicate the 12 cylinder flat-engine developed for Porsche 917 racing car)
In 1963 Porsche assigned Paul Hensler, later Chief Departmental Manager for Development, Mechanics, a project to oversee design and construction of a new horizontally-opposed four-cylinder engine for the 902, utilizing components from the new 901 six-cylinder engine, that would produce higher performance than their 356SC engine, and be less costly and complex than their Carrera 2 engine. Another option explored by Claus von Rücker was to increase displacement of the 356 Type 616 engine to 1.8 liters, add Kugelfischer fuel injection, and modify both valve and cooling systems. Considering performance, cost, and scheduling, Porsche discontinued both of these design projects, and instead developed a third option, to tailor the 1.6 liter Type 616 engine to the 902
