This classic Austin Eight Sliding Head Saloon has just been recommissioned after 25 years of dry storage.
It was registered new in 1941 during the war which makes it unusual in the fact that cars were not generally supplied to the general public between 1939 and 1945.
The first owner of this car was a farmer in the Yorkshire Dales and with farming being a reserved occupation, a car would be necessary for him to help the war effort.
The history file contains an original buff Log Book showing this farmer as the sole owner along with an invoice from 1953 for a substantial amount of mechanical and restoration work that he had carried out at a cost of £136 which equates to £3530 today.
The car was not on the road during the 1970s as when it was acquired by its second owner, a local businessman, in 1990, he had to apply to the DVLA to re-register it on its original registration number, DWY924, which it still retains today. The MOT at the time gives the recorded mileage as 16562.
After a short period of use the car was put into long term dry storage under this second owners house from where we recently collected it by trailer.
Since then we have recommissioned it for the road.
The petrol tank has removed and professionally refurbished at a cost of £360 and refitted along with new filler pipe and front to back fuel line with an inline filter. A new petrol pump has been fitted and the carburettor dismantled, cleaned and reassembled.
The sump has been removed, cleaned out, refitted and filled with fresh oil.
The cooling system as been fully flushed and new hoses fitted where needed.
The ignition system has been serviced with new parts consisting of a distributor cap, rotor arm, condenser, points, leads, spark plugs and a new 6 volt battery. The car now starts off the key and runs with good oil pressure.
The car is MOT exempt as it was manufactured prior to 1960 but a full 12 months MOT along with 12 months Free Historic Road Tax can be arranged for the new owner if required. The current recorded mileage in now 17190.
