The Michelotti designed TR4 arrived in 1961. It was and still is, a striking looking car - so much so that Triumph continued production of the TR3 model well in to 1962 amid dealer concerns that the new car might alienate traditional buyers. Although the basic mechanical components were similar to the earlier TRs there were many modern features - face level ventilation, rack and pinion steering, wind up windows and a substantial boot, unusual in itself for a 60s British sports-car. Over 40,000 cars were built before the model gave way to the TR4A and most were exported to the USA.
This car is a 1962 TR4 in White with a red interior. It has come direct to us from a regular customer and collector. He bought it from a fellow club member five years ago as a project and handed it over to Willow Triumph in Darlington for restoration. The car was stripped to a bare frame, the body was blasted and etch primed before painting and re-fitting and virtually every component inside and out was re-furbished or replaced except for the engine (an older factory re-built unit) which was treated to a new cam-chain and various seals and gaskets before re-fitting. Since restoration the last owner has used it occasionally and has covered only a few hundred miles, although it has been a regular sight at classic shows in the North East.
As you can see from the photos, there are some deviations from standard specification but otherwise, the condition is best described as close to concours and wanting for nothing. On the road this TR4 drives just as well as it looks.
