The Citroen GS Birotor was launched in 1973. It featured a much more powerful 79 kW (106 hp) Wankel birotor produced by the joint NSU-CitroŽn Comotor project. This style of motor is noted for its smooth power delivery which complemented the luxurious ride quality of the hydropneumatic suspension. To fit the engine in the GS body the car was extensively re-engineerd. The suspension shares a lot of characteristics with it's bigger sister the Citroen CX. The GS Birotor has disks all round and wider wheels and tyres. The engine is mated with the smooth 3-speed C-matic semi-automatic transmission. When launched the Birotor costs as much as the larger Citroen DS and about 70% more than a standard GS. The high costs of buying a Birotor combined with the start of the oil crisis lead to very poor sales. Citroen quickly pulled the car from the marked after only about 850 cars were sold. Then to avoid having to support the car with maintenance and parts Citroen tried to buy back or trade in all Birotors.

This GS Birotor has been in a French barn about 25 years and the resulting patina is wonderful. As seen on the pictures, the gold paint has faded and grey primer is visible. There are some minor surface rust spots in the sheet metal, but nowhere is rusted through. The floor has some dents and some surface rust. The original bitumen is peeling off in places. There is no rot in any of the doorshuts, under the headlights, in the front valance or any of the other usual places. The interior is in reasonably good condition. The seats have been attacked in places by moths and have become slightly baggy. All plastic parts are present and in good condition.

After all the work done to this car it drives again as intended. The engine is running smoothly
and pulls the car effortlessly. The engine does not smoke at all once warmed up. The C-matic transmission shifts smoothly. The suspension rides very comfortably without any knocks or creaks. The brakes pull up straight. The GS is registered in the UK and MOTed. All in all this GS is ready for the next enthusiast to enjoy. I'll be looking again for another project, I'm always interested in an interesting trade in to add to my collection of unique Citroens. I have a load more pictures of the car now and during the recommissioning. Please send me an emails for more information.
