Here's a potted history of this exceptional car. The car was bought new by Lord Darzi of Denham, who owned the vehicle for 20+ years. During his ownership, it was registered under his name, c/o Joe Macari Sportscars, who I assume looked after the vehicle on his behalf, and which also served to protect the owners personal details too. I believe this is quite a common practice. The car was then sold in 2014 and found its way into the hands of a collector and Mercedes enthusiast. I bought if from him in 2016, and sold to another life long Mercedes enthusiast a couple of months later. It's now back with me as the gentleman I sold it to wants an R129 SL in which to enjoy the summer, and who admits that's what he should have bought in the first place!.
Also important to note is that this vehicle has also just had a whacking £5K spent on it, receipts for which are included in the history file. This included a head gasket replacement, replacement of the engine wiring loom (with a new genuine MB improved part), front crankshaft oil seal, and all fluids were drained and replaced (including gearbox fluid and filter). You may rightly ask why did so much need spending on a such a low mileage vehicle. The reason is these are jobs that anyone buying an M104 engined W124, regardless of mileage, should allow for, and some of the items for example the wiring loom are not mileage dependent.
It is however completely obvious to anyone that this car has been barely used, and has been extremely well maintained, however as is the nature of vehicles with a similar ownership profile, there is little early formal service history. When I bought this car I admit I was somewhat concerned myself about this lack of history, but one look at the condition of the car, immediately allayed any reservations or doubts I had. At the end of the day you can have all the service history in the world, but if the car itself is a load of rubbish, it means absolutely nothing; after all you can't drive around in the service history booklet. Naturally I always try to source vehicles in superb condition with excellent provenance, but if it's a choice between the two, I'd chose condition each and every time, and it's in that department this E280 excels, and it's probably one of the best W124's I've ever driven; it's astonishing, and almost like a new vehicle in many respects.
Bodywork is also equally superb, and all the problem areas associated with the W124 (wings, inner wings, jacking points, jacking tubes, sub frame mountings) are all superb condition, and its one of the best preserved facelift W124's I've ever seen. This is probably down to the fact that the vehicle has spent most of its life in London. To further ensure the vehicle stays like this, the underside has received a very generous coating of Bilt Hamber Dynax UC.
Mechanically, as you'd expect of quality automobile having only such a small mileage, the car is equally fantastic, and with the recent and considerable expenditure mentioned above, its probably one of the best sorted W124's out there. The M104 straight six is a match made in heaven for the chassis of the W124, it's low down torque and super smooth power delivery perfectly compliments the W124's chassis dynamics and road manners.
Finally, interior; what can I say; this is almost like new. It's in incredible condition and really is a very nice place to be, and reminds you how cheap the interiors of today's cars feel in comparison. As you'd expect everything works as it should.
So there you have it, I, and quite a few others think this is probably one of the best, and lowest mileage W124 saloons available. If you can see past the limited early service history, whose absence in this case has a very valid explanation. Notwithstanding that, the recent considerable expenditure, will ensure that whoever gets this car is in for a real treat, and won't have to spend another penny on it for a very long time. The W124 was recently awarded Honest John's Best Classic award, and the best examples like this one will clearly demonstrate why it rightfully earned that award.
THE MTSV DIFFERENCE
Unlike some, I don’t just simply go out, buy any old car, give it a good clean, then advertise it for more than the purchase price, disregarding any issues the car may have in the hope the new buyer won’t notice…I just couldn’t do that. The cars I source are carefully selected, and I work very hard to ensure that when these cars leave me, I have the satisfaction of knowing they are as good as they possibly can be within the constraints I have. As such, in my 11th year of doing this, I have many repeat customers and a steady stream new customers coming along that have been recommended via word of mouth…this is the ultimate accolade for anyone in business.
Any other questions, please feel free to contact me at [email protected] or on 07976 280738. I'm a firstly and foremostly a true Mercedes enthusiast of many, many years, and a Mercedes Club Member, so it's a pleasure to meet and speak to like-minded people.
Finally, I'm situated in Keighley (pronounced keith-ley), West Yorkshire (Postal Code Area BD21) which is approximately 11 miles from Skipton, and 20 miles West of Leeds.
