After WWII, Messerschmitt was not allowed to manufacture aircraft, and instead turned its resources to other areas, and one such success was in making motor vehicles. It was at this time that Fend approached the company with the idea of manufacturing small motor cars, based on his Fend Flitzer invalid carriage.
The first of Fends vehicles made at Messerschmitt's Resenburg factory was the KR175, which was replaced in 1955 by the much improved KR200. Changes included the bodywork, including wheel cutouts in the front bumpers, rear suspension mounting reworked, and hydraulic shock absorbers were installed at all three wheels, with the tyre size enlarged to 4.00 x 8.
In 1956 Messerschmitt was allowed to make aircraft again, and lost interest in Fend's microcars, and sold him the Regensburg factory so he could continue production of the KR200. In 1957 the KR200 Kabrio was released, as here, featuring a cloth convertible top and fixed side window frames.
