MORRIS MINOR TWIN-CAM CONVERTIBLE - UNIQUE !! SOLD (1968)
|This Minor Convertible really is different. It was built by the Beardmore brothers who are well known in modified Minor circles. It is fitted with a 2.0 Fiat twin cam and is built on a Minor van chassis to create a much stiffer and safer base than an ordinary Minor convertible. (A standard Minor tourer is just a saloon with the roof cut off and some extra steel channels in the sills.) The chassis and front section of the van were used, fitted with saloon doors and rear section which was fully seam welded into place underneath. The chassis and Fiat engine are only half the story and this custom build has many other mods including a smooth bulkhead, up-rated brakes and suspension and over £2K’s worth of sound system. |
Mechanical specification as follows:
Fiat 132 2 litre twin cam engine with 1600 twin cam distributor.
Fiat 132 5 speed gearbox.
Performance clutch by Southam Metro centre.
Toyota Celica rear axle and handbrake cables.
Modified Fiat prop-shaft
Marina front brakes with Owen Burton conversion kit and Marina van hubs.
Modified Minor van rear springs.
Marina torsion bars with Spax telescopic dampers and polybushes.
Facet solid state fuel pump, Volvo 340 fuel tank.
MiM split rim wheels.
The interior has custom re-trimmed panels with storage bins and “Corbeau” front seats. “Spa” digital water temp and oil pressure gauge. The stereo has an “Alpine” head unit with “Rockford Fosgate” subs and Rockford power amps – which cost over £2k in the day.
This car was built over 25 years ago with a 1600cc Fiat engine and upgraded to 2000cc Fiat power a few years later. It is in very good condition and other than the odd paint imperfection it looks much as it did at the time of the conversion - testimony to the standard of the work completed at the time. It was built to be used and driven and it provides more fun than you could expect to have in a Morris Minor. The twin cam is smooth, tractable and quick enough and the handling is more go-kart than Minor and it is driveable enough to use every day, as long as you like plenty of attention. This is the first time that this car has been on sale since the last owner bought it in 2003 and he only sold it to us because he is emigrating.
Offered here for a fraction of the price of creating something this special, this Minor convertible is ready to use. It comes with one or two spares, detailed spec. sheet, original build details and a feature from “Street Machine” who tested it in 1993.
