1978 Alfa Romeo Alfetta GTV 2.0 For Sale

A little history:

Launched in 1974, the Tipo 116 Alfetta GT was named after the successful Alfa Romeo Tipo 159 ‘Alfetta’ F1 campaigned by Juan Manuel Fangio & Giuseppe Farina. This new ‘Alfetta’ shared its innovative rear transaxle and De Dion tube rear suspension layout with the Tipo 159 for excellent weight distribution. The new car added 5 speed gearbox, watt's parallelogram linkage and inboard rear disc brakes. Front suspension was by double wishbones and torsion bars. Power came from Alfa’s classic 4 cylinder cross-flow Twin Cam.

Designed by Giorgetto Giugiaro the Alfetta GT carried styling cues from the earlier Alfa Romeo Montreal (rear lights, headlight cut outs), but in fact it showcased what was to come. It’s easy to see how the Alfetta GT’s contemporary sharp edged design influenced Giugiaro’s later Volkswagen Scirocco, Golf Mk1, Lotus Esprit, BMW M1, Lancia Delta and DeLorean DMC12.

In 1976, with the final phasing out of the earlier Tipo 105 GT Junior and GTV (gain designed by Giugiaro along with the Aston Martin DB4 GT and Ferrari 250 GT SWB) Alfa Romeo launched the new 2. 0ltr Alfetta GTV. The GTV retained the delicate styling, stainless steel bumpers and unusual dashboard (speedo in front of driver, all other gauges in the centre) of the smaller engine cars. GTV’s can be distinguished by twin chrome whiskers in the grille, GTV scripts carved in to the C-pillar ventilation vents and two twin-choke Webber carburettors.

Four years later, in 1980, the GTV lost its distinctive two-piece tail lights (now a single plain lens), the delicate stainless steel bumpers were replaced with large grey plastic items, all the bright stainless steel was painted matte-black, even these perfectly formed C-pillar vents were binned in favour of large chunks of grey plastic.

Throughout its 13 years in production the Tipo 116 Alfetta was a successful racing car. Its first outing was the ‘74 San Martino di Castrozza rallye, it won the European Touring Car Championship in ’82, ’83, ’84 & ’85 and the Australian Rally Championship in ’87 when production finally ended.

Famously known as the car that bankrupted Alfa Romeo (the Tipo 116 was designed and engineered to perfection, unfortunately no-one asked the bean counters their opinion!), currently just 12 of the original GTV’s survive today on U. K. roads.

My car:

Finished in Medium Grey Metallic with the stunning Light Grey velour cloth interior, my Alfetta GTV was first delivered to A Magenis on the 1st August 1978 by Pagets, Alfa Romeo’s Cheam dealership. Unusually it was supplied with the rare and at the time expensive factory fitted Air Conditioning along with locally fitted electric front windows (GTV’s also have opening front quarter lights and rear side windows). The car was also fitted with Momo alloy wheels, a particularly unusual feature on an Alfetta GTVs.

The car was later passed on to Mr Jonas who took it Ramponi Rockwell, Alfa dealers in Lancaster Mews, London, to work on the car. Mr Jonas would go on to part exchange the GTV for a new Alfa with Ramponi, the GTV was put up for sale on their forecourt.

It’s often the case that one person is responsible for the survival of the very best examples of classic cars today. Having recently completed his duty as a Naval Officer, Andrew Chamberlain decide on a new career in law. His walk to work took him past Ramponi, he was taken by the Giugiaro penned lines and bought the GTV in October, 1990 with 63, 000 miles on the clock.

Chamberlain used the GTV daily and had it maintained by Alfa II of London. Chamberlain sold the GTV to another Naval Officer; Giles Webb. The GTV returned to Alfa II in June 1991 with 67, 000 miles recorded for extensive work including a gearbox rebuild, replacement clutch, propshaft coupling, exhaust manifold, suspension bushes and wheel bearings. In November 1991 Webb returned the GTV again to Alfa II with 73, 000 miles for an engine rebuild including pistons and liners.

Thomas Cuckson, yet another Naval Officer bought the GTV from Webb in May 1992. In December 1992 he returned the GTV to Alfa II now with 81, 000 miles for a routine service, rear brakes and differential seals. Cuckson kept the GTV until August 1999 when he and Chamberlain met by chance, neither knowing their shared Alfa history. Ownership returned to Chamberlain, the first job being to recover the GTV from HMS Drake.

In October 2, 000 Chamberlain took the GTV to MGS coachworks in Purley who completed a full photographic body restoration in including new rear ¼ panel and valance plus front and rear bumpers. Completed in March 2, 001 the bill was £7, 600 excluding parts.

In June 2, 001 and now showing 91, 000 miles, the GTV was taken to Autodelta of London. The standard 40mm carburettors were replace by specially jetted 45mm Dellortos, gas flowed head, sports cam shafts, manifold and exhaust were also fitted. Springs and shocks were upgraded, bushes and brake calipers replaced, discs and pads upgraded. The bill for the work totaled £10, 500.

Over the next 7 years and 9, 000 miles Chamberlain would go on to spend a further £9, 350 in maintaining and improving the GTV. Interestingly visually the Alfa looked pretty much as it had when it left the factory 30 years earlier.

In November 2, 008 Chamberlain returned the GTV to MGS coachworks who’d previously rebuilt the body. The GTV was stripped to a bare shell and photographically rebuilt including painting the engine bay and a new tail gate. The work was completed in February 2, 010 at a cost of £10, 800 excluding parts.

Shortly afterwards Bianco of Hookwood serviced and fitted new seatbelts to the GTV, mileage was now 100, 715. The GTV was used sparingly over the next 5 years until Chamberlain put the Alfa in to storage. I became the next lucky owner in August 2, 016.

Having enjoyed the GTV through Autumn I had Quest Brothers, St Ives iron out a few niggles including new electric window switches, prop shaft bearing, engine mounts and door mirrors. The tailgate was also repainted due to a little bubbling in one corner at the base of the screen. Invoices for the work totaled £2, 700

Today:

Of the 12 early Alfetta GTVs currently on the road in the UK today, this is probably the finest. During the past 18 years virtually no expense has been spared in maintaining and improving this GTV whilst keeping true to the character of those first early Alfettas. Bodily, mechanically and cosmetically, it’s exceptional.

The March edition of Classic Cars Magazine was dedicated to the sharp ‘70’s look, stating it’s today's must have. On the cover are the Lotus Esprit and the Delorean DMC-12; the cars directly influenced by the Alfetta GTV.
