1980 Ford Escort Mk. II 1.6 Ghia - a superbly original example
Reg. no. FHR 992W
Chassis no. t.b.a.
Engine no. t.b.a.
By 1980, the mainstay of Ford’s European operation, the Escort, was in its second generation. These Mk. II cars were a joint development between the German and British branches, using the same underpinnings as the Mk. I but with a revised, squarer look. Like its predecessor, the Mk. II sold like hot cakes, helped by Ford offering a car to suit all tastes – the L and GL two and four door saloons and estates for the average buyer, the RS2000 and Mexico for those seeking a sportier car, and the Ghia, competing in the hitherto under-exploited small luxury saloon market. The Ghia, considerably better appointed than most of its competitors, was available only with the 1.6 litre ‘Crossflow’ engine, an excellent, easily tuneable unit that performed well in conjunction with the car’s light weight and precise steering. By the end of production in 1981, almost a million Mk. II Escorts had been sold in seven years.
This superb 1980 four-door Ghia is extremely original and has clearly been well looked after during its period of storage from 1995. Both the paintwork and the interior are in excellent original condition and our vendor tells us that the only repainting he has done is a part on top of the engine. This is a car that deserves closer inspection and must surely be one of the best original examples left. This Escort comes with a V5c and an original owners’ handbook.
This and 100 other classic cars will be sold at auction, many UNRESERVED, on June 17th at Allington, near Chippenham, Wiltshire SN14 6LJ
