Our car is a 1975, right-hand drive Ferrari 365 GT4 2+2 in its original Verde Seabird (a non-metallic green) finished with Crema leather upholstery, Crema carpets and ‘mouse hair’ trim on the dashboard and console. Powered by a 4.4-litre Colombo V12 engine mated to a 5-speed ZF gearbox,the car has its original Cromodora ‘knock-off’ alloy wheelsalong with the six round tail lights that are characteristic of this model. It’s in good/useable condition and, with just97,000 kilometres (60,000 miles) on the clock, the engine simply purrs, the gearbox is slick and the car is a delight to drive. The car was subject to respray in 2016 (not bare metal).
The Ferrari 365 GT4 2+2 was Pininfarina’s answer to a design brief that moved the marque away from the more traditionally-styled, curvaceous lines of the Ferrari 365 GT 2+2, provided more rear-seat space than the Ferrari GTC4 and introduced the aerodynamic and body-styling thinking that was destined to become a feature of the seventies. Launched at the Paris Motor Show in 1972, the Ferrari 365 GT4 2+2 was a straightforward ‘three-box’ design based on a long wheelbase version of the Ferrari 365 GTC4 chassis, the ‘2+2’ sharing a number of design features from this, its immediate predecessor, including the Daytona-style, ‘pop up’ twin headlights. A total of 521 production models in both left and right-hand drive were built and trimmed by Pininfarina and assembled at Maranello between 1972 and 1976.
Our car was delivered new to Crepaldi, the Ferrari agent in Milan, in July 1975. Evidence points to it then being sold to a wealthy Italian family living in Monaco: the owner having a preference for right-hand drive cars (the family also owned a right-hand drive Ferrari 412). In preparing the car for salewe’ve carried out a though inspection and given the car a full service. We’ve replaced the shock absorbers with new Koni units, overhauled the braking system, replaced the fuel lines and fitted a new battery. Whilst there is some cosmetic areas that would benefit from some love, she if very presentable and is ready for the road.
Marking the time that Ferrari made a conscious move away from what could be called its ‘classic styling’ to introduce new thinking and, simultaneously, address the continual‘2+2 issue’, this is a lovely example of a model that is a true milestone in Ferrari’s history and one that thoroughly deserves its classic status.
