1965 Rolls Royce Silver Cloud III Drophead Coupe by MPW For Sale

By late 1962 the success of the S Series Continental series Bentleys entered its third and final chapter, with the introduction of the S3 Continental. The major cosmetic change was the introduction of the twin headlight system, providing Bentley drivers with more illumination. Mechanically speaking the S3 Continental was very similar to the S2 Continental, but benefited from having larger carburettors fitted and an upgraded power steering system. The success of the Vilhelm Koren designed Bentley S2 Continental had pleased the powers that be at Park Ward and his design was adapted for the S3 Continental chassis, with the introduction of twin headlights. The coachwork did not lend itself happily to horizontal headlights so they were instead positioned on a slight slant, a design that has commonly become known as the Chinese Eye. More importantly for the first time this design was also offered in the form of a Rolls-Royce. The Rolls-Royce Silver Cloud III models were mechanically identical to the Bentley S3 Continentals, with only the radiator, instrumentation and badging being changed. Chassis No CSC15C is one of just forty nine cars built in right hand drive to Design No 2045 on the Silver Cloud III chassis by Mulliner/Park Ward. It was originally completed in late 1965 and supplied by Jack Barclay Ltd to its first owner Mr V.R. Anderson of north Wales. It was completed in sage green with a green hood and a dark green leather interior. It then changed hands in 1968 when again supplied by Jack Barclay to Mrs Jane Elizabeth Hill in Jersey. Later in life CSC15C found its way to the United States before returning to London in more recent times. Over the past fifteen years, since returning to the UK, this car has benefitted from significant works which are included but not limited to full coachwork restoration and a re-paint in light metallic blue, a full re-trim, upgrading the air conditioning system and a detailed mechanical review and overhaul, including most recently a full engine overhaul. Bills for around eighty thousand pounds are in the history file, all funds spent over the past three years, backing up a large amount of further invoices detailing works carried out between 2003 and 2014. The car presents and drives superbly, this is perhaps the best example of a Chinese Eye type motor car that we have had the pleasure of offering for sale in many years. It is complete with tools, handbook and an extensive history file and should be seen and driven in person to be truly appreciated.
